Lavinia Agache was born on February 11, 1966 in Caiute. She was a prominent member of the Romanian team for many years, but was often overshadowed by her better-known teammates. Lavinia was not without her fans though, especially after the 1983 Worlds, where she was the only gymnast to qualify to all 4 event finals. She made the 1984 Olympic team which made history by winning it's only team gold medal to date. Sadly, Lavinia had to retire in 1985 following a knee injury at the 1985 World University Games. She was 19. She appeared in the 1991 World Professional Championships & decided to stay in the USA following the performance. On March 5, 1995 she married Tom Carney in Boca Raton, Florida, where she had been coaching. A few years later the couple moved to California to coach in Bakersfield, but in late 1999 again returned to Florida. Lavinia now coaches in Orlando, while her husband works for the Boca Raton Police.
