Eugenia Golea was born in Bucharest on March 10, 1971. She made her debut on the Romanian team in 1984 at the age of 13...although the gymnastics world thought she was already 15 since her date of birth was changed by the RGF & listed as March 10, 1969. She beat off a number of "older, veteran teammates" to earn a spot on the 1985 World team. She again proved herself to be worthy at the 1987 Worlds & the 1988 Olympics. Eugenia was amazingly consistent, & even has a skill named after her. On beam, the back handspring, layout, layout was first competed in an international competition by Eugenia! Thus it's actually called the "Golea". She retired in 1988 at the age of 17. After retiring following the 1988 Olympics, Eugenia joined her brother in a circus act in Puerto Rico. She soon established herself as the National Coach of the Puerto Rican team, but that only lasted for 1 year & then she returned to the circus. After a couple years, Eugenia immigrated to the USA, accepted a coaching job in Bedford, New York at American Gymnastics & is living happily with her boyfriend, Tony.
