This is the bog or wet side of the pond garden

This bed started life with the thought of being a bog but it has evolved into a wet garden. Although it looks dry, under the 2" of mulch it is very wet.

The area was dug out to a depth of 2' and lined with a rubber linner like a pond. A frame of 3/8 plastic pipe with 1/16" holes drilled in it was laid on the plastic and a 2' 6" stem with a faucet allows water to be added from the bottom (visible at the bottom left of the picture. Tap with red handle). The hole was filled with 2/3 peat and 1/3 dirt. The top was covered with wood and leaf mulch.

We have planted day lillies along the edges. In the wet bed there is cork screw rush, asatic lillies, palm sage, calla lilies, jack-in-the-pulpit and skunk cabbage. Under the red maple is blood grass and black mondo grass. There is varigated ribbon grass, varigated sweet flag and yellow maiden grass next to the pond. I add water about once every two weeks.
