Legends of the Magi: Death of a Hero To the person reading this, the very fact that you are reading it means that I am dead. My name is Aseroth, a red mage. I am writing these events as they happen in my grimorium, or enchanted spell book. This book, like all grimoriums carried by thoese who passed their training as a magus, has powerfull enchantments cast apon it to protect the book from destruction. If the user of said book dies, the book will teleport back to the tower of magus, and the reason of his demise shall be determinand there. Since only the owner of a grimorium can read it's pages, then ownership of this book must have passed onto the entire conclave of wizards, and the only event that can cause that is the owners death... After completing the training in the tower of magus, I was given the mission examine the increase of goblin kin around the city of Evangala. Normally goblin activity would call for foot solders, but Evangala is a special city, as the only way to enter it is by heavily guarded waterways. My job is to find out where the monsters are coming from, then others will deal with them. The lands surrounding Evangala is unique, a perfectly flat plain, with a ring of mountains, and inside of them, another perfectly flat plain. While no one is fully sure how this happened, the most accepted theory is the legend of Graumbelst. Graumbelst was an earth demon who entered this plane long ago, and created a huge mountain range to use as his home. When he did this, it unbalanced the relationship of good and evil in this plane. And as any magic user knows, all things seem to have their own way of balancing themselves out. An unknown magic user entered this mountain stronghold, and did battle with Graumbelst. Then using the powers of a magical amulet to boost his own great powers, he cast a spell that sent Graumbelst back to the abyss. The spell's power went out in waves, and destroyed most of the mountains that was Graumbelst's home, leaving only the ring that still stands today. The only way in or out of Evangala is by the Sererta river, a fast moving river. While it's fast, there are few turns in it, and no rocks or any type of rapids. This means it's easy to go downstream, almost impossible to go up stream. All ships go into the valley one way, and exit via the river on the other side. There are no known paths over the mountains, and no caves that lead anywhere. There are, however, many magicly sealed temples and caves in the area, some from the time after Graumbelst was tossed out, some before he even came to this plane. It's thought maybe one of these places was a breeding ground for the goblin kin, and it's my job to find out what one, and re-seal it if I can. Then foot solders will take care of the rest. This book tells of all the events that followed. Perhaps the reader can even figure out my demise from it's tale.
