This isn't really outback BUT it is a beautiful example of a "Queenslander" which I discovered in Bundaberg. This is probably the only distinctive Australian style of architecture. Many of the outback homesteads are in this style - but aren't close to the road for a photo op! The style is designed to cope with the heat of the north. The distinctive features are that the house is built off the ground to allow air circulation underneath. Often there are decorative skirts around the house, usually in either lattice work or vertical palings as here. Also there are wide verandahs on at least three sides to shade the internal rooms. Often you will also find that the verandahs are shaded further with lattice or may be enclosed with fly-wire to provide a cool place to enjoy an evening drink without being bothered by the flies or mozzies. The fence around the "home paddock" is usually wire - this style is called "Emu Wire".
