DEAD CALM
1989

John and Rae Royal Australian Navy officer John Ingram (My Man Sam) takes himself and his wife Rae (Nicole Kidman) on an odyssey --to recover from the horrifying death of their infant son. To me, THE most shattering moment of the film is the child's death, in the first few minutes of the film. I still think about that scene, and am consumed with chills.

John and Rae's cruise is suddenly interrupted by Hughie Warriner (Billy Zane), furiously rowing towards them, and, not coincidentally, away from a large schooner lying some half-mile to starboard. Hughie pours out his ordeal to the rescuers -- his shipmates have all died, the apparent victims of food poisoning. Hughie

But Ingram is skeptical of the stranger's tale, and with Hughie safely asleep, rows out to the schooner. As he discovers the bodies of the dead onboard the Orpheus, he realizes that Hughie's story is much more terrifying than food poisoning. He furiously rows back to the yacht, only to watch and listen in horror as Hughie sails off with his wife screaming in terror.

Ingram tries to save his wife

Battle to survive

Ingram battles to survive onboard the sinking Orpheus, his wife battles to survive with a crazed madman, and Hughie the madman battles his demons. As Rae makes tentative contact with her husband on the radio, their time is running out.

Shampoo-Sam style! This movie made me aware of two things. I desperately want to have a shampoo, Sam-style, and Nicole Kidman has a much nicer butt than me. (Big surprise?)

In the middle of nowhere there is nowhere to hide.

Hughie takes over

No commentary for this pic, I just like to look at it.
