Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Crusie) is a Navy Fighter Pilot. Together with his RIO and Co-pilot, Lt. Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), they have been selected to go to Miramar Naval Air Station, San Diego, California, also known as "TOPGUN".
While there, they will take an intensive nine-week course on ACM, which include going head to head with other Top Gun rivals; the quote "the best-of-the-best."
After only a few days, Maverick seems to be be the favourite to win the points championship, however his main competition, Iceman (Val Kilmer) is right behind him.
Maverick and Goose win their first ariel dog fight, taking out the mighty Jester, in the prosess. But that's when their wheels start to slip off. Maverick and Goose loose their second dog fight due to stupid mistakes. But on thier third dog fight, something goes terribly wrong. A freak accident occurs over the ocean that claims Goose's life.
Even though Maverick is cleared of any wrong-doing in the accident by the JAG, he still feels incredibly guilty. It is then that he must decide if he will go on and graduate from Top Gun or give up flying all together...
This was your typical summer action-adventure blockbuster. Chock full of octane and adrenaline, who could resist
I love Top Gun for it's outstanding cinematography (for which is was NOT Oscar nominated, oddly enough...) and the incredible ariel dog fight/action scenes.
The dog fights are the best part of the movie and were exceptionally well filmed. If you ever saw the "making of" documentaries on the picture, you'd know how hard it was to film. Props to the filmmakers.
One of the major draw backs of Top Gun is the love story mixed into the action. Charlie, played by Kelly McGillis, is the love interest of Tom Cruise. He meets her at the navy bar and soon finds out that she is a civilian instructor at Top Gun.
In most action movies, they have some sort of love-relationship between the hero and some girl. Top Gun is no different. If I wanted to see romance I would have watched a romatic movie.
Plot:
Visual Effects:
The areil dog fights are the best part of the film; they make the movie. One look and you will agree. No question.
As for other special effects, all of the explosions and plane crashes were done convincingly using models. Even though the producers and special effects team could not crash real planes (obviously!), the special effects turned out great.
Sound:
The smash hit soundtrack includes Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins, Heaven in your Eyes by Loverboy and the Oscar winning song Take my Breath Away by Berlin. All exceptional songs that just enhance the film 100%.
Character Development:
Atmosphere:
Realism:
There is no "Top Gun Trophy," for one thing; students are not allowed to date teachers, and there are so many examples of rule breaking that Maverick would have been thrown out of the fighter school ten times over.
However, there is realism in the picture. For anyone with a career in the naval airforce, they can say "Hey, that's what I do for a living. There are a few minor details that are wrong, but that's what I do for a living."
Warren’s Rating:

Aside from the romantic stuff, there is decent story here. Sorry, but it looses points for the romantic parts.
This was the best editied film of 1986, despite what the Oscars may have said. This film should have also won for Cinematography.
The score is very well done. The Top Gun Theme is the highlight of the score, and is very memorable throughout the film.
Any man who likes adrenaline pumping and high-octane fueled movies will love Top Gun. Any woman who wants to see Tom Cruise half naked will love this film, too.
Top Gun is Hollywoodism at it's best. While this film stays true to the concept of the real Top Gun, there are way too many things wrong with the film's portrayal of the fighter school.FINAL RATING
