This is the last installment of the epic trillogy directed by Peter Jackson. It is by far the best of three, and it has the most action and best battle scene of all three.
Here, we find Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) with the creature Gollum (Andy Serkas) on their way into Mordor to destroy the ring. The others, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Gimli (John Ryse-Davis) and Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellan) are preparing to defend the city or Minas Tirnith from the bastion of orcs sent by the evil Sauruman (Christopher Lee).
It is an all or nothing struggle for Sam and Frodo as they battle many obsticles including spiders, orcs, Gollum and each other. And as if that is bad enough, the brave heros are outmanned 100 to 1.
With Frodo and Sam dead tired and so beat up from the trek that they cannot continue, it looks as if this is the final straw for the Fellowship of the Ring, and it looks like Sauron will finall retake the ring he so desires.
The Return of the King has to be the best third movie of trilogy ever made, and it is the best one of all three Lord of the Rings films.
To put it bluntly, this is THE BEST film of 2003. No questions about it, hands down, THE BEST, maybe only nudged out by Lost In Translation, but that's a big MAYBE.
Plot:
You must have seen the first and second films to understand what is happening, but Peter Jackson has done an absolutly incredible job filming the final chapter of the trilogy. It follows the book very well, save a couple ommisions, how ever those ommisons are removed for time, and will be included on the inevitable extended edition DVD.
Visual Effects:
The battle scenes will blow your mind. Simply amazing; incomparable to anything ever shot. I know this is exactly what was said for The Two Towers, what else can be said?
Sound:
The score rocks, and the songs do as well. Very nice.
Character Development:
This is the culmination of the whole journey. Major, major developments at every turn.
Atmosphere:
If you've seen the first two, you'll come back every time. YOu can't help but be brought into this world for the final 1/3.
Realism:
The movie too damn good to care about realism. Any hollywoodism is outweighed by everything else.
Warren’s Rating:
Movies it beat out for Best Picture:
Lost in Translation; Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World; Mystic River; Seabiscuit
Is the movie worth your time to watch?
