One day, while tending his crops, an Iowa farmer hears a voice from nowhere that changes his life forever.
Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner), and his wife, Annie (Amy Madigan) live on an Iowa farm. While out tending his crops, Ray hears a soft voice tell him "If you build it, he will come." What does it mean?
Well, ray figures out that he must build a baseball diamond in orer to bring Shoeless Joe Jackson's ghost to life to play baseball.
Once the ball diamond is built (and ridiculed across town), Sholess Joe (Ray Liotta) appears and tells him that there are more people who want to play ball. Ray loves the prospect. However, he hear's another voice. "Ease his pain," it says.
Ray figures out that he must take an old reclusive author named Terence Mann (James Earl Jones) to a baseball game. After barely becomming friends with Terence, the two set out to find out what the voices mean, and just why Ray had to build a baseball diamond on top of his cash crop, corn, in the middle of an Iowa farm field.
Field of Dreams is feel good movie that blends subtle special effects with a great story and great characters. The actors used to portray the characters all pull off superb jobs, from Burt Lancaster to Ray Liotta and even Kevin Costner, and especially James Earl Jones.
Burt Lancaster, in the role of "moonlight" Graham, had the sophistication of the old actors. He brought style and class to the film; a blending of old and new actors. A wonderful job for a man who wans't going take on the role at first. He deserved an Oscar nomination in his last role.
W.P. Kinsella did a great job with the book and Phil Robinson did a great job with the screenplay. It is a touching, "family" film and a must see. But is the story quirky? Sure. But it's a good one.
Field of Dreams isn’t a ghost story, but it is a bit of a fantasy. It is a story of relationships, and dreams, and not giving up on them. Tieing them both together, the film tells us not to give up on our dreams, to make every moment count. You’ll never know when you may do something you’ll regret later in life.
It also tells us that even the simplest of things – like a baseball game – can bring even the worst enemies together. When is the last time you called you old man?
Plot:
Taken right from the book, Field of Dreams is a great adaptation. The story and characters all mesh together to form a very entertaining film.
Visual Effects:
There is a great use of visual effects in this film. The main effects shots are when the ghosts return to the corn... they "disappear" into the corn to return to where they are from (which we never find out).
The cinematography of Field of Dreams is excellent as well, using varied camara angles and movements. On top of that, the final shot of the film - the one with all the cars driving to the ball diamond - was well done.
Sound:
The score of the film was exceptional and fit the moods of each scene.
Character Development:
Not all characters changed; not all developed. Anni is a static Character; her only real "scene" is the PTA scene. Terence Mann and Ray Kinsella change as the film goes on, but that's about it. Even Mark, Anni's brother, doesn't change much at all.
Atmosphere:
You can easily get into Field of Dreams; it's not a hard film to start watching.
Realism:
Warren’s Rating:
Other movies nominated for Best Picture with it:
Born on the fourth of July; Dead Peots Society;
*Driving Miss Daisy;
My Left Foot
