October 26th, 1985. Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox), your average 80's teen, is asked by his friend, and inventor named Doctor Emmit Brown (Christopher Lloyd) to come to a mall parking lot early in the morning in order to help participate in an experiment.
Little does Marty know that Doc brown has invented a time machine (built into a DeLorean), which runs on - of all things - Plutonium... one cannister per trip. Moments after Doc Brown is murdered by the terrorists who supplied him with the Plutonium, Marty takes the DeLorean to escape, and is zapped to November 5th, 1955.
Stranded in 1955, with no extra Plutonium, Marty meets his younger mother (Lea Thompson) and father (Crispin Glover) and screws up an accident that was supposed to lead to his parents falling in love!
Marty meets up with a younger Doc Brown who helps him fix the time machine. But without Plutonium, the only thing that will help him get home is lightning, and they know just where to get it from!
Raceing against the clock and dodging local bully Biff Tannen (Tom f. Wilson), Marty must make the two lovebirds fall in love before the big "Enchantment Under the Sea Dance," ends on the night of the big lightning storm which will send Marty back to 1985.
Back to the Future is a blend of science fiction a la H.G. Wells with a dash of comedy and spoonful of plot. It is this combonation that made Back to the Future the great movie that it is. This is also why I particularly love not just it, but the whole trilogy.
This trilogy is not just a siple "zap through time" series; no, there is plot that must be completed in order for Marty to get back home. And our hero is not even Marty McFly, as one may think. It is, rather, George McFly. If George doesn't act in the right ways, Marty is screwed. Geroge is the pivitol character.
Right up untill the last minute, you never know if Marty is going to succeed or not... I won't spoil it and tell he does or he doesn't. There are many twists and turns which always make for a good film even if you don't like what you see.
Also, I LOVE the soundtrack to the movie. I mean, it was Back to the Future that got me into Huey Lewis and the News, and now he is one of my favorite singers. The Power of Love is one of my all-time favorite songs, and Back in Time is another of my favorites.
Plot:
Teen goes back in time back and can't get home unless he fixes what he messed up. Exceptional plot; wicked plot twists.
Visual Effects:
the visuals of the DeLorean rock! The team at ILM did a great job on the time travel aspects of the DeLorean... especially when it reaches 88 MPH. the shot of the car going through the so-called "time portal" and leaving the flaming tire tracks is the best shot of the whole movie.
Sound:
The score is exceptionally well done. All the songs are great. Huey Lewis (a BIG musical star at the time) rocked with the #1 smash The Power of Love and his other song, Back in Time is just as great.
Character Development:
It's more or less what the film is about!
Atmosphere:
Realism:
Of course time-travel doesn't exsits, but that's not the point. There was an authentic 1955 created for Back to the Future and you really belive that it is 1955.
Warren's Rating:
Is the movie worth your time to watch?
