Best quote: "By the authority vested in me by Kaiser William II, I pronounce you husband and wife. Kill them now." - Louisa Captain
German East Africa circa 1914, World War one.
Rose Sayer and her brother, Samuel, are missionaries living in a small village teaching Africans to read and write, and about GOD.
Charlie Allnut is a Canuck (from the greatest country on Earth, Canada!) who came with several other men to build a bridge. He now works in a mine, and hauls the mail on his little steamboat, The African Queen.
One day, Germans raid Rose's village, rounding up all of the Africans for slaves, and burning every building in the village. Even the church.
Time later, when the church has been rebuilt, Samuel contracts an illness and dies. Later that day, Charlie pays Rose a visit, and fins out the horrible facts of what recently happened.
Together, Charlie and Rose decide to flee to British Kenya, but to do so they must navigate a tretcheous river, and then an open lake patrolled by a German Battle Steamboat, the Louisa. This is when Rose decides that she wants to destroy the German boat for once, and for all.
Plot:
Destroying a German boat in Africa circa World War one. Interesting, to say the least.
Visual Effects:
Good for this type of Movie. However, when rose and Charlie are sailing the rapids of the river, you can tell it was filmed on a green screen because you can see the green screen through Rose's hat.
Sound:
Character Development:
Rose and Charlie go from being mutual aquaintances to friends to married, in a relitively short period of time.
Atmosphere:
If you like Hepburn or Bogart you'll love this film... if you don't, there is still something for most people.
Realism:
The war-ear setting works well.
Warren’s Rating:
Is the movie worth your time to watch?

Bogie gives great performance as Charlie Allnut. His chemistry with Katharine Hepburn is terrific; every time they are shown together they have a certain "spark," which is clearly evident.
However, Bogie's performance wasn't as good as Marlon Brando's performance in A Streetcar Named Desire, who should have won the Oscar, completeing the sweep for Streetcar.
Still, overall, Humphrey Bogart played a damn good Canadian, if one Canadian does say so himself!
