![]() Jose Carlos "Escadinha" dos Reyes Encina (1980's-2004) |
Escadinha "Stepladder" was Brazil's most notorious drug lord prior to the rise of Freddie Seashore. Encina had a knack for prison escapes having successfully excecuted two high profile escapes one using a rowboat in 1983 and another involving the landing of a helicopter on the yard of Isla Grande high security prison in 1985. In both instances Escandinha secured the help of corrupt prison guards who either allowed him to walk out of the facilities or did nothing to prevent his escape. Following his last escape Encina was shot twice in the chest by arresting officers in 1986. At his peak Encina controlled drug trafficking in seven shantytowns and controlled an organization of 300 loyal gunmen and distributors. The popular drug lord who once distributed food to the poor and paid for the construction of public schools was shot and killed as he travelled with a companion to a work release job on September 23, 2004. |
