Photo 17 :    I did not take too many photos throughout the rest of the race. There were lots of manzanita bushes in this section, which prompted the photo..   Another runner can be seen in the  upper-center of photo..

Photo 18 :    A photo taken during the second ascent up to Mt Baldy summit.  The second time up Mt. Baldy we took a different trail.
Photo19A photo of me at the Sierra Club Hut Aid Station, part way along the second ascent to Mt Baldy summit. The volunteers were very helpful at this aid station.  Filling up on peanut butter & jelly-topped saltine crackers, water and orange succeed!  helped me immensely. The second climb up to Mt Baldy summit was tough, but not as bad as I expected it to be.   The next mile or so of trail was very rocky, and I remember feeling very fond of  my vitesse trail shoes.
Photo 20: This photo was taken during my third pass through the Notch Aid Station. I had my photo taken with Geri, one of the aid station volunteers . She had answered some of my questions about the course via email about a month before the race. She is from Arizona.

From this point , runners begin the ascent to Mt. Thunder.
Photo 21 : The ascent and descent of Mt Thunder was along the dirt road shown in this photo... not too bad at all. . After reaching the summit of Mt. Thunder (8587 ft)  most of the remaining 7.7 miles of the course was downhill...  When I returned to the Notch aidstation for the 4th and final time,  my watch read 8hrs 26minutes.... with only 6.2 miles remaining, mostly downhill, I realized that I had a good chance of breaking 10 hours even with my slow-poke conservative downhill running.

The final 2.5 miles of the course were on a hairpin asphalt road. The quad muscles took a final beating on this strecth.  This was my second least favorite part of the course because  some of the curves were blind and lacked a shoulder. On a couple of the curves  I would stop and listen before attempting going around the curve in the road... I did not want to become a "truck magnet", like my 94 Jetta .
I reached the finish line in 9:34:05, and I still had a fair amount of energy.  I was so stunned about breaking 10 hours, and not having any problem with my left leg-knee. Then about ten minutes later, the RD announced some awards and my finish time was good enough for 3rd woman overall... Masters women finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd.. so my award reads "3rd Master Female".

I had a great time at this race.  Co-race directors Larry and Andy put on a well-organized and supported race. The volunteers at the aidstations were very helpful.  The $5.00 Natl Forest Adventure Pass did indeed buy a lot of fun.
Photo 22:  A photo of me with my award, taken inside the tent of the start/finish area. Photo 23:   A photo of co-race director : Larry Gassan. Here is Larry's report on the race and the final results.
