Single parents Rick and Lily meet at their children's school and feel an immediate attraction. They date, but family problems interfere: Rick's son Eli is having trouble academically, and Lily's daughter Grace feels unpopular and unattractive. Rick and Lily are embarrassed when her children catch them entwined on the couch.

"Let's Spend the Night Together" - Originally aired in Australia 30 May 2000

Rick is embarassed on a date with Lily when he runs into an ex-girlfriend. A rumor goes around school that it was Grace and Eli caught together, not their parents. Despite encouraging Eli to postpone sex, Rick decides the time is right for him and Lily. The couple fights memories of past heartache during their first night in bed.

"The Second Time Around" - Originally aired in Australia

As their wedding date approaches and the expenses mount, both Rick and Lily have second thoughts about getting married. They cancel their original plans for an elaborate wedding, and hastily arrange a small ceremony with only immediate family. Will Gluck is the minister for the ceremony.

Series 3

"Busted" - Originally aired in Australia

In the season premiere, Lily's job comes to an end when PagesAlive goes bankrupt. Judy, on the other hand, gets good news when another bookstore owner says that he wants to license the "Booklovers" concept from her. While driving Grace and Jessie to school, Eli gets into an auto accident. When the police arrive, they find marijuana in the car and arrest Eli. Karen and Rick demand that he get a job and straighten his life out. Karen also insists that Eli give up music. With help from Lily, Eli lands a job at a recording studio. Karen is not satisfied, and wants her son to get a "respectable" job. When he asks Lily for advice, Eli is told that "one day he'll have to make decisions for himself." He interprets this to mean that he should keep the job. When Karen learns that Lily has been advising her son, she is furious and demands that Eli move in with her. Lily tells Rick that she doesn't agree with Karen's point of view, and says that Eli's passion for music should be supported. After much debate, it is decided that Eli will keep the job and continue to live with Rick and Lily.

"The awful truth" - Originally aired in Australia

Acting on a suggestion from Tiffany, Judy decides to take over Phil's, the bankrupt restaurant owned by Jake. The plan is to turn Booklovers into a bookstore/cafe, with Jake managing the restaurant side of the business. Judy also asks Lily to be a partner in the business. While discussing the new business arrangement, Judy loses her temper and yells at Lily and Jake. This incident makes Lily realize that working with her sister isn't a good idea. Instead, Lily takes a job as the assistant to Les Creswell, the personnel director at a local radio station. Judy gets in touch with Will Gluck, and also hopes to rekindle a romantic flame. Will breaks her heart, though, when he says that he is moving to Florida to be near his daughter. Meanwhile, Grace's English teacher, Mr. Dimitri (Eric Stoltz) has instructed his students to keep personal journals. Mr. Dimitri presses Grace when he feels that she isn't being completely honest in her journal. The situation that Grace is trying to avoid in her journal is her attraction to Eli. Since their parents have gotten married and moved in together, Grace and Eli have become quite friendly with one another. They are, in fact, a little too friendly for Jessie, who is jealous of all the attention that her brother is giving her new stepsister.

"Kind of blue" - Originally aired in Australia

Sam Blue, the married man with whom Judy once had an affair, comes back onto the scene. He gets in touch with Rick, and offers Rick a job designing a posh new hotel. Sam also reveals that he is in the middle of a divorce. Judy also has designs on working with Rick. She tells Jake that she wants to hire Rick to renovate the expanded Booklovers. Jake is understandably reluctant to work with the man who is now married to his ex-wife, but he agrees. Outside of Rick's office, Sam and Judy run into each other. Their first meeting is a bit awkward, but they begin flirting with one another. They eventually kiss, but Judy tells Sam that she is not ready to get into another relationship with him. Meanwhile, the stress of having a new child, as well as the stress of almost losing his business and having to work for Judy, causes Jake to have panic attacks. He sees a doctor, but ultimately learns that he is still in good health.

"Acting out" - Originally aired in Australia

Tensions in the house heat up when Jessie and Grace decide to audition for the same role in a school production of "As You Like It." At the auditions, Mr. Dimitri surprises the students when he tells them that he is planning a musical version of the play. Meanwhile, the ambiguous relationship between Judy and Sam Blue continues to get more, well, ambiguous. They spend the night together, and Lily suspects that something is going on between them, but their relationship is a bit unsteady. Judy wants a real commitment from Sam, but he's not ready for another serious relationship, as he is in the process of getting a divorce. After the call-backs for the school play, Grace tells Mr. Dimitri that she isn't sure Jessie could handle the stress of being in a play. When he asks what she meant, Grace reveals Jessie's eating disorder, but quickly back-pedals and assures him that it is not a big deal. In the end, Grace lands the lead role, and Jessie gets a smaller part.

"Destiny turns on the radio" - Originally aired in Australia

At the radio station where Lily works, the station manager Les abruptly fires one of the on-air personalities. Scrambling to fill the air time, Les throws Lily behind the microphone. Lily is a bit nervous at first, but quickly gets into a groove, giving out advice to the troubled callers. She puts her foot in her mouth, though, by talking about some personal family issues, like Jessie's first date. Karen is furious when she discovers that Lily has been talking about her daughter's personal life on the air, and Rick is also annoyed with Lily. Meanwhile, Grace becames quite jealous about Jessie's first date, as she thought that the boy, Tad, actually had a crush on her.

When Lily offers to throw Tiffany a baby shower, Jake sincerely questions whether or not he will have a role in his new baby's life.

Lily and Karen both suffer from unrealistic expectations raised by the coming of Thanksgiving.

When sex becomes awkward for the first time in their relationship, Lily and Rick realize how much work it takes to keep a marriage exciting.

When Eli loses his job and Grace's teacher questions her acting, they both learn the hard way that real self-confidence can be one of life's toughest accomplishments.

Amid complete chaos, the early arrival of Tiffany and Jake's baby brings the entire family together on Christmas Eve. Meanwhile, Judy's first encounter with Sam's 11-year-old son doesn't go very smoothly.

When Sam and Judy's relationship becomes the talk of the whole family, Sam finally realizes he wants Judy to be more than just a friend. Meanwhile, Karen's loneliness and discomfort is compounded when Jessie cancels plans with her mom to stay at Lily's house.
