Jacoby Transfer made simple(?)

This assumes you do not also play Texas transfers which would change some of the sequences and allow you more shades of meaning.

A Jacoby Transfer is an artificial response to 1nt (or 2nt) requesting opener to rebid in responder's long suit. 2D>2h, 2H>2S,2S>3C Note: If responder actually has diamonds instead of clubs, responder corrects by bidding diamonds over openers forced rebid of 3C.

To make a transfer to a major you require at least a 5 card major. You may have weak, game invitational, game forcing, slam invitational or slam forcing hand.

1NT-2D/2H-2H/2S-P is a weak hand

1NT-2D/2H-2H/2S-2NT is game invite with 7+ to 9- and exactly 5 of the major. Opener passes with minimum, goes to game in NT (2 support)or Major (3+ support) with more.

1NT-2D/2H-2H/2S-raise to 3H/3S is game invite with 6+ to 7+ and exactly 6 of the major. (With 7 of the major bid game opposite a strong nt.)

1NT-2D/2H-2H/2S-raise to 4H/4S is strong enough for game but not interested in slam and 6+ of the major.

1NT-2D/2H-2H/2S-3NT is strong enough for game but not interested in slam and exactly 5 of the major.

Opener converts to major with 3+ support.

If responder is interested in slam, he can bid another 4+ card suit (with 5/4 in majors start with Stayman not transfer. so the other major should show 5/5), make a power invite to 4NT(asking pass, 5 major, 6 major or 6 NT),5NT(asking 6 or 7 major or 6 or 7 NT), use Gerber (if agreed over transfers and by the way RKC Gerber works great here), bid 5 major (showing 6+ and asking pass with minimum, 6 major with maximum).

Opener has only one other choice over transfer, to SUPER ACCEPT by jumping to 3 of the major. This shows maximum with good 4 card support and allows responder to bid game with hands he would otherwise pass.

To transfer to a minor you normally have a weak hand and are running to 3C/3D. Immediate bids of 3C/3D show slam interest and cannot be passed by opener. In between, just bid 2nt or 3nt as appropriate. By transferring to a minor, then re-bidding something else it is possible to set up some other shades of meaning.
