Youngs and Shelby County Religion

Lewis Creek Baptist Church

Among the founding members were David and Matilda (Young) Hendricks, Neal & Eliza (Young) McCann, William & Martha J. (Patsy Young) Morris. James Young, Jr. later became a member of this church, most probably when he got married for the second time. This church is located around the area where all these family had their original land patents, near the old Shelby Township school on South Highway 9.

Little Blue River Baptist Church

William G. and Nancy (Young) Morris were among the founding members in 1828 of this church located in Union Township, 7 miles from Shelbyville. This is very close to the William G. Morris original land patent in Shelby County. Rev. William Morris III, father of William G. Morris, was a Baptist minister who started several churches VA and KY.

St. Vincent Catholic Church

In the fall of 1828, the first Catholic Mass in Shelby County was held at the cabin of Thomas Worland, father of Leo H. Worland. Leo H. Worland and John M. Young both married Louden sisters. It was a visit by Leo and his wife to her sister that prompted the Worland migration to Indiana. St. Vincent's is located on the E. Michigan Road. It is the mother church to the Indianapolis Archdiocese.

Methodist Episcopal Church, Shelbyville, IN

The land on which this church sits was donated by one of the first settlers, John Young. You can read more about it Here.

There was a mass migration to Iowa of Shelby County residents in the 1850's. Religion continued to follow with the Young clan.
