Welcome to the World of Quake! The new standard for first person action shooters in a fully 3-D environment! Long gone are the days of Wolfenstein and Doom2 limitations on the gaming platform! As we journey deeper into the meat of Quake you will see that there is a lot to be learned and a lot that is yet to come from this technology! Probably the most obvious gain is the presence of the rooms above rooms concept that was barely being born in games like Duke Nukem 3D. In Quake however, the availability of being able to construct just about any damn thing you want to makes this a hard game to beat, but an excellent game to design for! Let us begin our little Quake journey at the beginning shall we!
In the beginning, there was Qtest1! And it was good! For anyone that happened to have a network in their back pocket, it enabled them to really begin to enjoy the multiplayer mayhem that is Quakematch! Then, at precisely 4:23pm PST on Saturday, June 22nd 1996, the shareware version of Quake slipped quietly onto the internet sites around the USA and all hell broke loose. No more than a month later I had my own registered version of Quake delivered to my doorstep, and I mean that literally. I almost stepped on it! Within days the first Quake servers were available to host games over the Internet! Within weeks FTP.CDROM.COM had a multitude of Quake related downloads available! From .mdl files to new skins, it was all there and it was all good! Pretty soon Quake editors were popping up all over the Internet, followed up by the first homemade Quake levels! When I first figured out what the hell to do with QBSP I felt like a god! Or at least a humble demigod!
