Director: Mike Vejar. Story by: Eileen Connors, Brannon Braga and Joe Menosky. Teleplay by: Joe Menosky.
"In the book which is my memory, on the first page of the chapter which is the day that I met you, appear the words 'Here begins a new life'". (The Doctor, quoting from Dante's "La Vita Nuova".)
Plot: When compiling holographic images of the crew for his mediacl files, the Doctor discovers that he had performed on operation on Harry Kim but has no memory of ever performing it. He finds out that some of his memory files have been erased and sets off to find out who deleted them and why they were deleted.
Guest cast:
Nancy Bell ("Ensign Jetal") Scarlett Pomers ("Naomi Wildman")
Some trivia:
* Kes was originally set to return as a guest to this episode. However, it never happened. * Robert Picardo describes this episode as the episode which sees the birth of the Doctor's soul.
Memorable scenes:
* The scene between Naomi and the Doctor at the beginning is quite funny. * The scene where the Doctor is forced to make a tough decision and decide between 2 equally critically injured patients. * The scene in the Mess Hall where the Doctor asks Neelix about decision making. This in turn leads to the Doctor's "mental breakdown".
Some quotes:
"The Doctor is now our patient." (Janeway)
"We gave him a soul, B'Elanna. Do we have the right to take that away from him now?" (Janeway)
My comments: Another great episode in my opinion! I just can't get enough of Picardo. His acting was flawless as was the story. It was interesting to see the Doctor suffer from his own version of a mental breakdown because of a difficult choice that he was forced to make. A must see episode!
