A Lesson On Dragons

Southeastern Bowl (#529)
This area of the bowl is the highest point of the bowl floor; from here, it slopes down and to the northwest, spilling out to the plateau below the wide gap in the Weyr rim to the west. Various tunnels here lead into the Weyr's inner caverns; the living caverns, hatching grounds, and main Weyr tunnel all branch off from here. To the west lie the stables where the Weyr's runners are housed. There is also a stone stairway that leads up to the Weyrleader's weyrs.

Kaeryn (#7720)
With a height of about 5 foot 4, this young woman is not exactly overbearing in stature, but the confident air about her makes her seem a little taller. The strands of her golden hair flow fluidly down her back, ending in gentle curls at her waist. Bringing attention to the features of her heart shaped face are her blue eyes, highlighted with golden flecks, that sparkle mischievously in the light. Her skin is lightly tanned and delicate, tiny freckles powdering her small nose. A mysterious look in her eyes, and the way her pale pink lips upturn in a smile make her seem even more attractive. On her right wrist, there is a strip of harper blue wherhide that was formed into a bracelet.
A soft, luxurious flaxen dress in a rich shade of blue drapes gracefully from Kae's shoulders. The neckline is gently scalloped, scooping down just enough to show off her slender neck and the thin silver necklace that encircles it. The sleeves are short, ending about a third of the way down to her elbow, and the hem of each is decorated with silver threaded embroidery. The bodice is close fitting but flares out from the hips to where it ends just above the knees, allowing full movement.
A bright silver knot dangles from a fine silver chain, a mark of friendship.
A knot of blue and white adorns Kae's shoulder. Two twisted chords formed into a loop and a long tail represent her ranks as a Journeyman of the Harper Hall. Within the knot are ribbons of black and orange signifying her posting at Ista Weyr.
She is wearing a silver and gold braided chain bracelet with the Dolphinsinger charms.
Kaeryn is 26 Turns, 8 months, and 10 days old.

Kara (#6179)
Kara's very thin, yet muscular body is displayed by the clothes she wears. Turns of riding her beloved lifemate, Ilsinth, have hardened her body but it shows the softness of joy that comes from doing what she loves. Her rich tan coulour crinkles around her eyes and dissappears into the soft reddish blonde hair that is soft and feathery, long splayed out on her back below her shoulder blades.
Kara wears dull black leather trousers, supple and comfortable. Accenting her calves is a Ilsinth colored inlay that sweeps from the back of her knees around the front and tapers towards the inside of her ankle. The boots on her feet run to mid-calf with show same exact inlay as her trous, fitting the pattern and colours. Small bone buttons hold her forest green blous closed up to but not including the top button of the nearly black mock collar. The long sleeves of the soft cotton blous are hidden by the arms of the wherhide jacket she wears. The supple greying wherhide ends at her waist with catches on all the openings to protect from the icy bite of ::between::, with its lining of cotton over downe.
Kara is wearing delicate ruby and silver earrings.
Kara is 35 Turns, 9 months, and 6 days old.

Tynar (#17168)
This sturdy young man with alert grey eyes appears quite handsome for a person his age. From what you can tell, he's roughly five and three quarters feet tall and weighs something near 145 pounds. His rich brown hair is fairly clean but mussed a bit, as if he's been outside hard at work. He seems to be in good health, not showing any signs of illness or injury. He soon turns from your gaze, however, as something else catches his eye.
He has on a thick green tunic that has apparently had a few holes worn in the elbows. Upon his lower body is a pair of brown breeches and a pair of thick soled wherhide boots. All in all, this outfit has seen a bit of wear and tear, but has held up fairly well under the torture of this young man. Strapped around Tynar's waist is a belt with an attached knife and pouch. Belt Pouch hangs loosely over Tynar's shoulder. Perched on Tynar's shoulder is Dawnfire.
Tynar is 21 Turns, 8 months, and 19 days old.

Filli (#13860)
Filli stands the height of 6'0. Her deep Jade eyes sometimes change as a light sky blue depending on what mood she is in, they are normally always peering out from behind her long, thick Raven black hair that runs down her to the middle of her back. The ends of her hair lay in soft curls. Her hair helps out line her beautiful eyes, along with her evenly tanned skin that she got from working outside so much.
She wears a white tunic that is slightly beging to wear-out, her soft weyr-hide trouser are dyed in herder craft yellow and white, the are a bit short at her ankles because of her height. In her hair is a bronze Firelizard hairpin holds most of her hair up out of her face and eyes but some hangs down into her eyes. Around her waist is a belt knife witch is used for all her herder chores. She wears soft newly shinned black boots that have been well taken care of. Straped around Filli's waist is a belt with an attched knife and pouch. On Filli's shoulder is Kamas.
A knot of pure alabaster hanges from this herder girl's shoulder Denoting her as Candidate at Ista Weyr.
Filli is 21 Turns, 4 months, and 2 days old.

Kara ducks under the nibbling Ils and waves to Kaeryn as she tosses down a sack of herbs.

Kaeryn wanders quietly, her long blue skirts swirling and swishing around her legs as she walks. Seeing Kara wave, she pauses and returns the wave, calling out in her usual smooth tone, "Good afternoon."

Kara sighs as the last sack hit the ground and opened up spilling only a little of the contents. So she gets lowered down with the last four and recloses the bag. "Hi Kaeryn. Ils and I made a southern run for herbs. The cook should have enough and so will the healers and I." she smiles to Tynar, "Thanks for the help, now we move everything to the Infirmary for sorting."

Tynar continues to catch and toss sacks ot the ground in a little pile. Since these are light ones, he feels capable in stacking them in a little pyramid. Once they're all finished, he smiles and nods at Kara, "Heh. I presume you need help for that, too, huh?"

Kara giggles. "Yes, I'm Kara and I've met you before but don't remember. Your?" she asks softly.

"Do you need another pair of hands?" Kae offers, holding hers up to show that they're quite available for use at the moment. "I'm sure Annly and all the help in the infirmary will be appreciative, of course." One hand pulls slightly at her skirts to lift them from the ground and she takes the few final steps toward them. "Just tell me what to grab and where to go."

Tynar raises an eyebrow, "Who, me? Oh, it's Tynar." He smiles a little, and grabs a pair of the bundles, one over each shoulder. Bulky though they may be, with them being light counteracts their bulkyness, "Ya, lead the way."

Kara smiles. "Thanks you two." she grabs the heaviest bag in one hand and her precious healer bag over her shoulder and heads to the infirmary. "Kaeryn, how is T'rell doing? Sejith?"

Ground Weyrs (#4213)
Dark stone arches upwards to vault high above the entrance to these ground-level weyrs. Large enough for more than a few dragons, pillars define the expanse of one smooth dragon-couch from the next, to offer at least the hint of privacy. Redolent, the air struggles towards the vents high above in an attempt to escape the prevalent odors of redwort and numbweed that drift and lurk in every tidy corner. Tunnels branch off like tentacles, heading into dragon-healer's quarters and the infirmary further southeast.

Kara is small but strong and carries the bag carefully into the Infirmary with a smile.

Infirmary (#4059)
This large bubble shaped cave is most obviously natural. Showing sighs of recent renovations and overhaul, the walls are freshly painted and the fittings look quite new. One wall of the cave is covered in cupboards, one prominent one is marked with a black skull and crossbones, a heavy lock bolted to it. In the center of the room directly under a large glass glow basket is a stone bench covered in a padded sheet, this area is obviously the examining table. Around this bench are racks, draped carefully with sterile cloths. A bench against the back wall contains a sink and a water heater as well as some research equipment including a white cloth draped over what must be a microscope. The wall opposite the cupboards has three beds against it with curtains designed to be drawn around them on tracks, a chair beside each bed. The room smells faintly of redwort and numbweed.

Kae carries a pair of bags, one in each arm, and trails quickly behind the others. "T'rell and Sejith are both well, as always, I don't think either of them ever are, to be honest." She grins and shakes her head, "T'rell's taking well to being a father, I think, and Sej, he just sees Bren as a little pet."

Tynar lugs his parcels in and looks around, hming quietly, "Where do you want them?"

Kara giggles. "Ils and my little one are like that too. Um, put everything on one of the cots and can you two get the remaining bags Tynar, Filli? Please?"

Filli nods softly, "Sure." she setting down the bag on one of the cots. She waits for Tynar so she can run and get the last two bags.

Tynar tosses his bags onto cots and nods to Filli as he walks back to her, "OK."

After setting her bags down on the cot beside the others, Kae scoots over to a nearby cot and takes a seat. "How old is your little one now? T'rell doesn't take Bren up to his weyr, he's afraid she'll fall of the ledge. I think he's a little overly protective if you ask me but.." she trails off, lifting her shoulders in a shrug as her fingers slip through her blond curls. "Enough about that, right?"

Kara giggles smiling. "Over 7 turns now. She's with my Da at Grinstead, been there since a few turns after she was born, I I travel too much" but it hurts her to admit that.

Filli walks out with Tynar. Comming back a bit later with the last bags. "Same place?" Filli ask grinning. She waits for Tynar to catch up with her..oops gotta remember not to use the long legs as much.

Kara nodnods. "Same place. Thanks you two and now um, sit join us. Ask me anything about Dragons." she beams to the two before she locks away a literjohn of fellis.

A sympathetic smile is offered Kara's way as the candidates return, "I'm overly protective as well, and I know it, but all I can say is that I'll try not to be." Getting comfortable, she puts her hands behind her on the bed so the weight of her upper body rests against them, and looks from one candidate to the other.

Filli grins, "I'll remember that next time." she says with a grin and places her own package upon a empty cot. She raises a eyebrow. Isn't it just fun to be looked at..hehehe

Kara says, "So no questions about dragons you two? I'm the Senior dragonhealer so if you have a question or three?" she puts away more critical powders and turns to sit next to Kaeryn. "Hmm?""

"Maybe *I* should ask questions then," Kae offers, trying to switch her usual role as the teacher into the role of the student. "I always wondered, why is it that weyrlings aren't allowed to have relationships? Other than taking time from their dragons, of course."

Filli hums softly, "Is it all as crazy as it looks?" she ask Kara with a small smile. She don't mean nothing by it she was just wondering.

Kara giggles. "Kaeryn you should see Sejith and Ilsinth eat together." she shivers. "Its why I don't eat meat" she giggles. "Um, well Filli first, depends on what you mean, and Kaeryn, your lifemate is just a baby and radiates to anyone with half a sense exactly what you and they are feeling. So say, I fell madly in love with you as a weyrling" she blushes just a little, "and I got all gooey ever time I saw you, everyone and everything would know. and let's say your a virgin and you have a relationship, and there is some small amount of pain from being your first time, your lifemate would take that as a threat against you and do everything it could to protect you." she pauses looking around. "I I did fall in love as a weyrling um well the night before I impressed actually. It was like waliking on the hottest sand and shards all at the same time." she looks around her eyes sad.

Kara adds softly. "If you have a relationship and you keep it from your lifemate it is just as damaging, it depends on the bond you have. Ils and I had a hard time of it and everyone knew I was in love." she smiles softly. "Not doing anything about it led to alot of middle of the night swims, Ils and I became fish."

Kae wrinkles her nose and gulps, "I witnessed Sejith feasting *once*, and unfortunately, it was when I was pregnant. Not a happy moment for me, and I promised T'rell never to go to the grounds with them again. Granted, it was probably just because I was pregnant but I'm not taking any chances." As she listens to the explanation, her lips part, forming the shape of a small 'o', showing her understanding, and she nods her head, "I see, and I guess that makes sense then, doesn't it. When dragons are older, they understand and don't go on about such things then," she pauses and grins at Kara, "I suppose if they did, this weyr would probably know a little more about my life than I wanted them to." A soft blush touches her cheeks at that comment, but she shrugs it away, "Me, I never had to learn all of this, being that I'm not exactly 'rider material, but I do love that big hunk of bronze that I spend so much time with."

Kara mmms. "Its why we do not have relationships until they have their first flight. Then you both have urges so powerful that you feel the rock around you is responding, then after that human love is pretty trivial to them. Except that they DO respond to you even now Ils and I" she blushes. "She'll respond if I have any desire or passion outside a flight and we have to be extremely careful if they are close to a mating flight. So Filli? Tynar? got more questions?" she winks to Kaeryn.

Tynar blinks a little from where he took up a seat and looks over at Kara, "Huh? Questions about what?"

Kara giggles. "Dragons silly" she smiles warmly. "I'm sure you have questions about everything?"

Nodding at each key point, as though she were a student once again, Kae does pay close attention to everything that the 'rider explains. Important for her to know, of course. "I never really understood that before, though I suppose I could have asked T'rell at any given time and he'd have been willing to explain it," she pauses, taking a moment to spread her skirt out so that it falls over her bent knees and almost to the floor. "You'd have thought that having been here as an apprentice, I would have learned... of course, any time a dragon had a flight, I..." there's that blush again and she laughs at herself, "I'd run and hide, basically."

You sense that Ilsinth wafts minty green as she speaks softly. "But we do know everything."

Kaeryn blinks slowly, one eyebrow raising in disbelief, and she glances at Kara, a look of complete confusion on her face. After blinking again, she just shakes her head as if trying to wake herself up.

Kara raises an eyebrow. "Do you do that now?" she asks softly "Alot of people do, hold bred I guess, its one of the reasons we have alot of children around, even drudges pick up on it all."

Tynar raises an eyebrow and glances to Filli. He glances back to Kara and opens his mouth to say something, pauses, then shrugs quietly, "I don't think any of the questions I have are ones you could answer." He shrugs a little, quietly.

Kara smiles to Tynar, "Try me? Its not often a Dragonhealer will have time to just sit and chat like this" she giggles at Kaeryn eyes glowing with an almost unearthly presence then it disappears as quickly as it came.

Filli blinks softly as she stands trying to think of a good question. She looks at Tynar and gives him a look as if says well come up with something.

Tynar shrugs a little and just quietly asks, "Don't suppose you know about how they 'know' things, do you?"

In your mind, you hear a soft voice say, << Everything! We are dragonkind we share everything. << the minty green fresh taste to the words >> Kara and I do. >>

Kara mmms softly., "Know what? Hon, they know alot, never lie, and can sense when someone would make a good rider."

Filli hums softly, "I alway heard the they don't really know..Only the hatchlings really do." she says with a shrug. She is not the rider maybe she is wrong. "But I could be wrong." she offers shyly.

Kaeryn leans toward Kara, pausing once again as if she's listening, shaking her head once again before her voice drops to a soft whisper as she says something for Kara's ears only. As she pulls away, she shrugs, as if showing that she doesn't understand something.

To Kara: Kaeryn gulps softly, "Does Ilsinth often speak to others?"

Kara giggles softly. "oh that! Well some dragons are better at it than others. Blues are good search dragons, they are sensitive to what it is that makes us all riders. Only the hatchling know who is perfect for it and generally that person is also on the sands. Its like finding your other half, a mesh so tight sometimes you do not know where you begin and your lifemate ends." she smiles to Kaeryn.

Kara whispers, "Only if I like the person too."

Tynar nods softly and tips his head at Kara, "And the Hatchlings are never wrong?" A corner of his mouth twitches at that question, and he settles a little further into his chosen spot.

Filli ahs softly as she listens. "So the saying the Dragon always knows is right." she says the only time Filli pays this much attintion is if she is learing about Runners..Runner=DRagons..both beasties one just alot biger.

"Everything?" Kae whispers, mostly to herself, but loud enough for those sitting close to her to hear her as well. An embarrassed smile is offered in Kara's direction as she opts to just sit back and listen once again.

Kara shakes her head. "Never wrong. Riders make bad choices and since you are so close they go along with you but the dragon is never wrong." She giggles smiling to Kaeryn. "Well almost everything" she winks then back to the other two. "Not in choosing a lifemate and not when fighting threads, their instincts are incredibly good. We just have to care for the big lunks" she says the last with caring and love.

Kaeryn laughs, giving Kara a small smile as she pushes herself to her feet, "Speaking for caring for big lunks, T'rell's with Brencia, so I should probably go rescue him." To the candidates, she offers a smile as well, nodding to each in turn, "Good luck on the sands, and each of you should come visit me some time so I can sketch you up before the hatching." With a wave of her fingers, she slips out the door toward the craft areas.
