Dormitory Lounge (#13282)
Rapa bites down on her lips seeing that she really should pay more attention to what she does. Taking in what she has done she goes and gets the writing board. Her hand reaches the board first, but seeing that he was also going to retrieve it she lets it be getting up at the same time. "I'm sorry..." She goes to see if she was forgiven. But with must of her lack of luck at that moment bonks with his head. She moans for a moment as she looks at him. With one hand rubbing her little bump she takes a step back looking Jal over, "I didn't need it. Really....Are you ok Jal?" She sounds hopeful, maybe she can be forgiven?
Kaeryn wanders in, a little slower than her pace usually carries her, and quietly takes in the sights and smells of the room. Not wanting to disturb the pair already residing in the room, she stands near the hallway and waits to be noticed before speaking.
Rijalvas grabs up his slate and straightens, moving a step back from Rapa as he rises. "I'm fine," he says, his tone a bit irritable. "Really." He looks from his fellow apprentice to the board, tracing it with his fingers to ascertain a lack of damage to the thing. "No harm done." His own hand stays well away from his head, holding firmly to the slate board. "Just watch where you're going, okay?" His gaze drifts slightly, only now noticing the new arrival to the room. "J -- Master Kaeryn!" Quick correction there. Sharp one.
"Good morning, Rijalvas," Kae greets the 'sharp' apprentice with a nod of her head and a sleepy smile. "Rapa, good morning to you as well," she also greets with an acknowledging nod. "Up and ready for classes already, are you? Though, I couldn't blame you if you'd rather spend the day on the beach than in class, because I would." The new Master's gentle blue gaze shifts around the room and she shakes her head, "Hasn't changed much since I was an apprentice."
Rapa turns quickly turns around looking. "Master Kaeryn...." She smiles toward her as hears Jal. The 'problem' from a moment before forgotten as she gazes over to the Master. She takes a few steps away from Jal and goes over to the couch but doesn't sit. Instead she stands and waits to see what Master Kaeryn will do. She listens to the Master talking noding back, deciding not to answer back.
Rijalvas's eyes brush the room in an unconscious echo of Kaeryn's glance, tracing out the boundaries of the lounge. "Oh," he says, not sure what else to use to fill in the space. 'Wow, that was a long time ago' seems... inappropriate? Dangerous? Both? Besides, he's too busy trying to figure out whether he was just given permission to skip class -- or at least whether he can convince some of his teachers that was a valid interpretation.
"Yes, it was a long time ago," Kae answers the unasked question, knowing that's what she would have been thinking were she the apprentice. "I trust the pair of you are getting your homework ready for your classes, and that's why you're up and about so early, but not down in the dining hall trying to get the food before the others?" Both receive a grin before she moves to study the board hanging from the wall. "It's a beautiful day for classes to be held outside. Maybe you should mention that to your teachers. I'm sure Oli would give in to that."
As Kae moves over to glace at the board, Rapa takes a sit on the couch. She takes into mind the comment about the food. Actually she's neveer thought of that. But she would never. Please she's only up this morning because it's the best time to practice. Hearing Kae's comment about having classes outside she nods and okies to it, she'll mention it. She watches Master Kae look over the board and with the corner of her eye watch Jal. At the same time she starts to finger her flute. A sudden idea comes to mind, "Um...Master Kaeryn. Is it possible to take up another instrument?" She looks up interested in the answer.
Once Rijalvas figures out what board it is the newest master is studying, he fast loses interest. His attention slides to his slate, whose chalked lines were a bit disrupted by its tumble. Rapa's question slides his eyes up to her, then over to Kaeryn again. His expression is less hopeful and more disbelieving. Instruments. Who'd want to do more'n they have to in their first year?
"Another instrument?" Kae turns slowly, studying Rapa silently for a moment before answering, or questioning. "How many do you play currently?" Without waiting for an answer, the elder harper makes herself comfortable in one of the chairs. "It's usually recommended that harpers learn, or are at least familiar with, as many instruments as possible, but usually, your first year should be devoted to learning the basics of theory, vocals, and your primary instrument. Later, well, we can hope you'll be able to do more."
Rapa listens to Master Kae. "I play one: the Flute and I have a guitar. But for some reason the guitar really doesn't interest me. I was hoping of starting another string instrument. I know that will be alot of work but I think I can handle it..." She looks up at her wondering if she should have kept quite. For some reason every time she trys to do something she gets in trouble. She silences and waits for the answer.
Rijalvas's attention drifts away from Rapa when the conversation pans out less shocking than he originally thought. His eyes wander back towards the dorms, where his own gitar is living quietly not in his way.
"The only thing I can suggest is just to follow this turn's courses and speak to whichever journeyman you are assigned to about what you'd like to do for next turn," Kae suggests with a grin and a shake of her head. "I haven't been around the hall as a regular teacher, so I'm not the best person to ask what you'll be allowed to pick up, I'm afraid." Head is nodded in the direction of the Masters' offices, "Caramak might be able to help you with that, but I'd wait until the end of the turn to ask. And keep in mind, you don't want to pick up another instrument until you've mastered this one."
Rapa nods, "I see." Well that went better than she thought. At least she didn't get scolded at. Instead she takes out a little notebook and starts to read from it. Might as well get some study time in before classes right? From the top of the book she watches the other two seeing what they will do.
As Rapa falls silent, Rijalvas awkwardly tries to pick up the reins of a conversation; he may not be a practiced teamster, but he'll give it a gallant go. "Are you... going to stay at the Istan Hall long, master?" he asks.
"No, actually," Kae replies with sparkling glow in her eyes, "I'm taking over as Ista's Weyrharper, so I'll actually be around less, for a while, anyway." Not that she seems to mind, in the least bit, about the change.
"Oh." Rijalvas's conversational shift worked for one step, so he bravely tries to maintain it for the whole flight of stairs. "Ista Weyr, huh?" A pause, then: "When are you going, then?"
Rapa listens to the conversation for a moment, "Yes, when?" She puts down her book and sits up to listen
"I've been at the weyr, actually," Kae points out with a twirl of her hair around her fingers, "just come back to the hold when T'rell and Sejith have the time to bring me, if there are things for me to take care of. They're on sweeps right now, due to gather me and 'cia in a candlemark or so."
"Oh." Rijalvas likes that word. It can be used to express an infinite number of ideas, depending on inflection and context. With this inflection and context, it means: 'I'm not sure what to say, so I'm stalling'. "Um." That's another good filler word. "I... thought... I hadn't seen you all that much."
With a sigh, Kae pushes herself out of the chair and back to her feet, where she tiredly stretches her arms up over her head. "I was considering have a bit of breakfast before I go, and I need to wake 'cia and get her dressed, so I'm afraid I need to take my leave now." A polite nod is offered to both before she walks toward the hallway, "Have a good day in classes, will you?"
Rapa nods, "Ok."
Rijalvas hugs his slate to him and bobs his head, relieved. "Okay!" The onus of conversation has been lifted. "I'll see you around, probably. Clear skies, master."
"Clear skies, Rijalvas," Kae replies with a grin and a wave before slipping out into the hallway.
