Sound Clips

Sketches is a short work in six movements for computer-generated sound. The movements are paired – 1/6, 2/5, and 3/4 – by compositional procedures. Numbers two through five were created by applying conditional probabilities to traditional 12-tone structures. Numbers four and five apply the same compositional procedures to M7 transformations of the same structures present in numbers three and two, respectively. Number six is the retrograde of number one.

Numbers one, two, five, and six are all easily-discernable arch structures, while numbers three and four are a hybrid of arch and binary. These arches are constructed by building up multiple layers of rows: numbers one and six move from two layers to four and back, numbers two and five move from one layer to two layers to three and back, and numbers three and four move from six layers to twelve and back – the second halves of these movements are also retrogrades of their respective first halves.

Sketches was premiered on February 27, 2005 at Raritan Valley College.

Approx. Duration = 7:30
