for Solo Flute was completed in the Spring of 1999 and premiered by Bridget DePaola in the Spring of 2000. for Solo Flute is in an arch form. It employs a layered pitch structure. In this case, two streams of pitches are layered both temporally and registrally. Both pitch streams begin in the same register. As the faster-moving stream separates itself temporally it also separates registrally, moving increasingly higher above the slower-moving stream, until a point approximately three quarters of the way through the piece. At this point, the process reverses itself until it ends essentially where it started. Finally, extended techniques (including non-vibrato, alternate fingerings, harmonics, and fluttertongue) supply another layer. The use of extended techniques follows a different scheme than that of the pitch material: while there is a gradual increase in the number of techniques up to the focal point, there is no reversion.
