Subdivisions:The contemporary free -till now- Epirus is a geografical district of the Greek Republic.Epirus also is divided in four major areas, which are: Prefecture of IOANNINA with capital the city of IOANNINA, Prefecture of THESPROTIA with capital the town of IGOUMENITSA, Prefecture of PREVEZA with capital, the town of PREVEZA and Prefecture of ARTA with capital the town of ARTA.The population of free Epirus is around 450.000 people. In the occupied -by the Albanians- North Epirus exist several major towns, as ARGYROKASTRO, HIMARA, KORYTSA, AGIOI SARANTA, AYLONAS and PREMETI. The Greek Epirotians of North Epirus are around the 350.000 persons. Also there are 250.000 Epirotians in Athens, and 300.000 persons around the world (mostly in USA ,Australia and Germany). Free Epirus: The capital city of Epirus is IOANNINA.The city was established in 527 A.C. by the Vyzantine Emperor Justinian. Nowadays Ioannina is a modern urban center with 250.000 habitants and a lot of developments. It has an airport, a university and a lot of commercial comodities. It is famous for its natural beauty and its lake ( the known Pamvotida lake ) which is one of the biggest of Greece. The town of Preveza is situated in the Ionian Sea. Preveza has a lot of beautiful beaches and it is a very touristic place. The town of Igoumenitsa is also near the sea and is one of the biggest ports of Greece. The town of Arta is a commercial and agricultural settlement not far away from the Ionian Sea.It is very historical and traditional. North Epirus: The occupied North Epirus is unfortunately totaly undeveloped, because of the Communistic era and the Albanian hostile administration. Although it is a very beautiful place with a lot of rivers and mountains, it doesnt offer neither the foundamental commodities as transport network, electricity health care or commercial development. Helpless and without any international concern for their situation the North Epirotians became emigrants to save their life and dignity. |
