Maytag
This engine was my Dad's. It was given to him by a long time family friend about 10 years ago. My parents were visiting her one Sunday and my Dad went for a walk around her old barns (her husband had passed away some years earlier and the farm had been unused since then). In one of the buildings he saw this engine and asked their friend about it. She told Dad that she had no use for it and if he wanted it was welcome to it. Dad had it in the trunk in about 5 minutes!

Once home, he went through the whole engine to see what shape it was in. I don't have much info on what he might have done other than I know he went through the ignition system and fixed several problems there.

Once he had everything mechanically sound, he cleaned it all up and painted it. One weekend Dad and my brother and I tried to start it. We cranked on it a long time and eventually got it to run by holding our hand over the intake to the carb. Turns out it was missing a check valve in the carb. It ran pretty good while I held my hand on the carb, and that's the only time it has run since he got it. I intend to get the missing parts and then mount the engine on my trailer with all my other engines.

The Maytag can be considered a Hit&Miss engine in that it only fires when the engine slows down. However, since this is a 2 cycle engine it has no exhaust valve to hold open. Therefore, even when it's not firing it is taking in mixture from the carb and blowing it out the exhaust - not the most economical way of doing things!
