1413H 29 Apr 2002 - Cure for Monday Blues?

'tis a blue Monday today, and the rainy weather makes it worse... Thank God for 2-hour lunches.  I just got back from Hard Rock Cafe, where they have $6.90 set lunches on Mondays and Tuesdays. Wednesdays to Fridays are at $12.90 or something like that. They have different sets for each day of the week, and they do change their weekly menu quite regularly i think. Had their chicken pot pie for main course just now, and i must admit it was pretty decent indeed.Plus, the set lunch comes with soup and dessert, and free-flow drinks. $6.90 is a good deal definitely... Definitely helps soothe the Monday blues...

Only problem is now i feel like sleeping more than ever... Oh, my world for a bed right now...

0041H 29 Apr 2002 - Faraway, so close

If I could stay... then the night would give you up
Stay, then the day would keep its trust
Stay with the demons you drowned
Stay with the spirit I found
Stay, and the night would be enough

3 o'clock in the morning
It's quiet and there's no one around
Just the bang and the clatter
As an angel runs to ground
Just the bang and the clatter
As an angel hits the ground...

A 1-0 defeat to Tottenham at White Hart Lane leaves Liverpool needing a major miracle to clinch the Premiership title. I am absolutely gutted... absolutely...

1242H 27 Apr 2002 - 3 Chefs

A Japanese chef, an American chef, and a Thai chef were on a flight to take part in a culinary competition. While over the Pacific Ocean, the plane got into trouble and they crashed into an unknown island. The 3 chefs were the only survivor, but they were rescued almost immediately by the natives. Unfortunately, the natives were cannibals hungry for some imported meat.

The 3 chefs were each tied to a stake as they watched the cannibals prepare to cook them. A huge pot of water was being boiled, a huge fire was being readied for a BBQ, while a cannibal was sharpening his cooking knife on a rock. All 3 chefs started to panic.

The Japanese, desperate to save his own skin, beckoned to the cannidal chef, and whispered into his ear...

"My sashimi is world-renowned. If you don't eat me, I can prepare the other 2 chefs into the best human sashimi you would ever taste..."

The Amercan, somehow overheard the Japanese, then also beckoned to the same cannibal chef, and whispered into his ear...

"No one can beat my secret recipe for roast chicken. If you let me off, I can prepare for you the crispiest and tastiest roast human you would ever eat..."

The Thai chef, sensing what the other 2 chefs were up to, beckoned to the same cannibal chef too and whispered into his ear...

"My tom yam soup is popular among all the rich and royalty in the world. If you spare my life, I'll make you a human tom yam so delicious, your people will be talking about it for generations..."

The cannibal chef, after hearing out all 3 outstanding chefs, then threw the American chef into the pot, roasted the Japanese chef over the fire, and sliced the Thai chef into thin slices to be eaten raw...

Why?

Because too many cooks spoil the broth...

1339H 26 Apr 2002 - Smashing!

I was listening to my CD on my way to YMCA for my drums lesson yesterday. I was still listening to it as i walked into the studio. As i took my discman out from my bag to switch it off, Kenny, my teacher, saw me and we then proceeded to spend the next hour trying to jam along to The Smashing Pumpkins' "Today" and "Perfect". Simply smashing! It would have been better though, if not for the fact that there were 7 drum sets beating away, and not always in unison. I enjoyed it anyway...

The weekends are here again! Hoorah!

Farts.

Some are smelly, some are loud.
Some are sneaky, some are proud.

Right now, mine are sneaky, silent, stealthy, swift and smelly. Truly deadly. Could be the beans i had during lunch. Stay clear of me. Awas! Achtung!

Oops! I did it again... Eeew... I need a gas mask...

1017H 25 Apr 2002 - Speed Limit 10 words per minute

Ok so there's some improvement when i try to update from work, but it's still freaking slow... like i'm caught in some sort of a time warp whereby i only see on screen what i type about 5-10 seconds later... and no, it is still not because i type that slowly...

Check out this
web ring... I'm pretty sure i dun qualify lor... c wat i mean?

Arse-nal beat West Ham 2-nil last night... i think the Premiership's theirs... dun see the gooners of Arse-nal dropping points against Bolton or Everton, thot West Ham was the last chance to take points away from them... now if Arse-nal beat both Bolton and Everton, their last game against Man U(re) will be inconsequencial... i can only hope Ljungberg stop rescueing the gooners...
Liverpool still in with a faint hope...

While on the topic of footie, Gay, i mean, Gary Neville suffered a foot injury that is similar to Beckham's infamous metatarsal injury... Sir Alex thinks its coz they've been rooming together too much... there goes Man U(re) and England's right wing...its too much of a freak coincidence, dun u think?

So Renee, remember when u told me that 2 things i ever write about in my blog are
Liverpool and crap, well i hope that me writing about Arse-nal and Man U(re) proves you wrong... wait a minute, damn! I'm still writing about crap...

How about penguins? Do you consider them as crap too? Earl will be so hurt to hear that if u think so...

______________________________________________________________

0054H 25 Apr 2002 - Speed Limit 5 words per minute

That seems to be my typing limit when i try to update my blog from home... and no its not coz i type that slowly, but rather, that seems to be the limitation of the geocities pagebuilder... i really should get hold of some other web design software and do something abt my layout some day soon...

ok, semi-inspired by
loe's writings, here's my little pseudo-literary contribution. Bear with me...

" I'm happy but not so glad,
I'm angry but not so mad.
24 yet still a kid,
scarily intrepid...

I'm just a kid, not yet a grown-up
Life's just a little fucked up
Maybe it's time to wake up
but my alarm's a little screwed up...

Wasting my time by default,
forgetting all that i've been taught.
Should have paid more attention
to Good Charlotte's motivation proclamation.

Maybe it's time to wake up
but it's just too tiring to get up..."

pardon me, i just had some drinks... but then again, i'm sure you faithful voyeurs should know i'm full of crap anyway... =)

1028H 23 Apr 2002 - Sleepy is as sleepy does...

i feel so sleepy its amazing i can still stay awake to type... i wanna go home and crawl onto my bed and hide under the pillows and blanket... and the weather when i had to rag my ass outta bed this morning was so ideal for sleeping... well, so ideal i overslept anyway. the funny thing is, i was actually having this dream, and in the dream, my boss was making some comments along the lines of him not having said anything all this while, but he actually noticed all the times i come in to work late (which means everyday). it was freaky coz the dream felt quite real, but thankfully, its only a dream...

damn i really feel so sleeepy i kinda have a headache right now... i think i shall shut my eyes for a while...

______________________________________________________________

1004H 22 Apr 2002 - Back at work...

...and exactly 2 months til the official end of my IA. well, if not for IA, i would probably be taking my exams right now, but as it is, im still living out a pretty uneventful and pretty predictable existance right now. should i complain? i guess not... yet being in sch does have its advantages... like waking up as and when i feel like, instead of at 7 plus every morning... guess thats one of my main gripes abt IA. oh well, at least i dun have to worry abt exams for this sem... i m grateful for that... still, i wish i can have more sleep in the mornings... *yawn

and being in this rather monotone existance, i realise i dun really have that much to talk about here... so i end up just spouting nonsense, talking cock, and spouting nonsense... basically, mainly crap. well, at least i dun whine abt life being bad to me or about me having any problems... i spare you the tedious details of my life.

just feel like writing and writing today, but unfortunately, my boss did hand me a fair amount of work to settle while he's away in China(again!) so i probably will have to end here...

bah, who cares abt work? let me continue...

what makes a blog exciting/interesting/captivating? is it the layout? well, while i do admit that there are some blogs/websites with really cool designs, i find that most are pretty much run-of-the-mill... does having a interesting picture on a page translate into a good layout? does being able to fit every single shit thing into a page(thus having to use illegibly tiny fonts) count as good use of space? while i dun profess to be an expert(look at my layout and you will know why), i am entitled to my opinions and feel that a good layout needs more than a good pic or to be info-packed... i guess it needs to be first of all legible, must have easy-to-follow links to other sections, good colour schemes, and overall pleasing on the eyes... sigh... dun think i will ever come up with a good layout by my own judgement then... colour combi just ain't my forte...

yet a good layout is only one thing... i think there are a few more impt points that draw people to visit a blog over and over again:

1. Interesting entries. wun wanna visit a blog where all the owner talks about are penguins...

2. Choice of theme/topics. i love to visit sites where all the owners talk about are penguins...

3. Frequently updated pictures. everybody loves to visit a pretty/handsome owner's siteespecially when there's lotsa eye-candy to ogle/drool at...

and so on and so forth...

but i think the most important reason that people keep going back to the same blog is because they are friends of the owner... i know for a fact that i visit the blogs of my friends almost everyday, to see what new stuff they put up, so and to see what new crap to talk abt in the comments/guestbook...

so if u have been visiting my site pretty often coz u consider me a friends, thanks, and please do come back again soon... i promise not to talk only about
penguins...

note to self: be at Anfield for a home game some day soon...

1029H 18 Apr 2002 - Boring existence...

You know life is boring when the most exciting thing to happen to you is diarrhoea that keeps you home from work...

Just kidding...

I went back to see the doctor after all and rested at home... due to my rather unpredictable bowel movement, i couldn't go out to enjoy my MC. Actually, by the time i felt well enuff to, it was too late oredi...

and guess what, i'm starting to feel giddy again now in the office. maybe its the sick building thats getting to me... "good" thing i got my pills with me now... hang on a mo while i pop some in...

ok, popped 'em in liao... maybe the world will stop spinning now...

1053H 17 Apr 2002 - Wednesdaze...

Din go to work yesterday coz of tummy aches... and slept the whole day thru... now i'm in the office, but still getting that shitty(literally) feeling... i think the longer i'm staying at work, the more dazed i'm getting... actually feeling quite giddy right now... should i go home? can't decide... too giddy and dizzy... let u know the outcome in my next entry... dum da dum dum...

1439H 15 Apr 2002 - In Memorial...

Actually wrote a fair bit about the Hillsborough tragedy that happened 13 years ago at the Sheffield Wednesday's home ground, but stupid notebook hung on me so i lost all that i wrote without saving it... dun think i can find the right words again, so i'll just let you read about it yourself... All i can say is that i am moved and touched by the accounts of the survivors, and the words of those who have lost their family or friends. To the 96 scousers who left us on 15 April 1989, you are not forgotten.

Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart, and you'll never walk alone. You'll never walk alone.

1333H 12 Apr 2002 - not so lousy but i
still wanna go home!!!

ok back from lunch... actually my mood has been more or less ok already, but now i just wanna go home to sleep... this friends of my boss showed me this $50 dollar note withthe last 6 digits of its serial number as "318888" If you say that in cantonese, it sounds like business prosper prosper prosper prosper... quite cool, eh?

After a few months, i finally went for a haircut, and now my hair is back to its carpet-grass stage again... time to stock up on the gel...

I am feeling amazingly sleepy... so  sleepy... so so sleepy... i am gonna sneak a nap...zzz
______________________________________________________________

1022H 12 Apr 2002 - I wanna go home!!!

Why am i stuck in office right now when i feel so much like going home to sleep? woke up and was almost immediately put into a lousy mood... can i cook up some cock excuse to go home now? like, maybe say i forgot to wear underwear or something... nah, probably wun work... and i probably wun work much in office anyway... wonder where i can find a nice secluded corner in the offie to nap?

1708H 11 Apr 2002 - Stopped procrastinating today...

Finally thought of a more title-like title for my site... Why "2 Stupid Penguins"? Coz there are 2 stupid penguins in the picture, stupid!

Probably have to change that name when i put up another pic...
______________________________________________________________

1025H 11 Apr 2002 - Help the dogs...

...and cats and rabbits and hamsters and any other animal that doesn't seem to be able to protect itself from people... check out the
SPCA, and this volunteer site called Canine Love Rescue and Rehoming. I did have thoughts about getting a chihuahua if i ever get the time/money/chance, but after visiting these sites, i think i would gladly adopt the dogs or cats there... they need homes more than those adorable and over-priced purebred puppies you often find in pet shops, boys.... Most time, adopting a dog is basically free, you may have to pay for some medical fees for stuff like sterilization, but its peanuts compared to buying a puppy. Some of the dogs up for adoption are also trained, and are usually quite adaptive, so its like you dun have to train your pet all the way from scratch. but do remember to think carefully before you make the commitment, the dog will depend on you for pratically everything. you need to feed it, clean it, and most imptly, have the time and heart to love it and cherish it... i'm getting mushy... *bleah but i'm serious abt what i said... adopt if you can, especially all you with big houses and gardens. i would, if i have the time and money and space to keep one... i guess my lifestyle right now isn't suitable for me to have a pet... but if your lifestyle does, please consider it...

I wonder where i can adopt a penguin...

1131H 10 Apr 2002 - What a relief...

Yes, in more ways than one! back from my pee-cum-shit break, and the pagebuilder din hang last time... phew...

Word of the day at
dictionary.com is Quondam. Shit, with dictionary.com, i'll probably never use a real dictionary again... other than as a paper-weight...
______________________________________________________________

1059H 10 Apr 2002 - Lousy lousy geocities pagebuilder...

i was updating my blog a few miutes ago, then i couldn't save what i entered coz of some error... then my IE crashed... damn #$%@!!! now i gotta try to write what i wrote just now all over again... ok, time to put my memory to the test!

Owen's hat-trick of misses probably cost Liverpool a place in the Champion's league semi-finals. but i'm not complaining. i think they did well to even reach this stage, coz a lot of so-called experts din even expect them to make it through to this stage, after having been drawn in the same phase 2 group as AS Roma, Barcalona, and Galatasaray(which incidentally is probably the single name with the most ocurrences of the letter "a" that i can know).

Now Liverpool can concentrate on winning the remaining Premiership games, and praying that Arsenal drop some points in their run-in... i am looking forward to seeing Babbel back in action even if only for a few minutes at the end of the season... Everyone loves him... hell, everyone loves everyone else in Liverpool! (Not the Gary Neville kind of love) i guess thats one of the reason why i love Liverpool... they have great spirit and camaraderie... =)

Speaking of soccer, i played a round last evening with some of my fellow IA students at Motorola, and my been-rotting-on-the-racks pair of boots finally completed it's decomposition and disintegrated while i was on the field. (Qn: if disintegrate is the opposite of integrate, then why isn't disintegration the same as differentiation?) Finally, a chance(excuse?) to hurl my ass down to Queensway to buy meself a spanking new pair of boots... nuthin too fancy or expensive, maybe a $200 to $300 pair will do... haha i'm kidding... boots dun grow on trees for me, you know? who do u think i am? Owen?

phew... ok, guess the preceding couple of paragraphs is roughly what i wrote before thepagebuilder crashed on me... of course, i embellished it somewhat, since i dun have a photographic memory... now i need to pee...

the pagebuiler had better not hang on me now...

1047H 9 Apr 2002 - Time

Ok, a bit late in mentioning this, but better late than never... The other day, i went to Junwei's new place in seng kang for a visit... bloody hell, singtel has almost no reception there!!! thankfully, i'm on dualband and could still get a bit of the GSM1800 network reception... i must say the flat looked pretty cozy, but most of the units are still unoccupied. word of advice for people moving to seng kang soon: Get M1... me? i'll stick to singtel since i'm staying bloody put...

Junwei also just got back from Korea not long ago, and he got me a pack of korean ciggies with a really classy packaging... it's called
Timeless Time, comes in a white cig box with silverish wordings... unfortunately, the only english words onthe box are "timeless time", "special mild cigarettes", "www.ktg.or.kr" and "made in korea". When smoked, the cigarette has a honey-fruity fragrance, and a deep and mild taste without stimulation... light and smooth... ok, if u know korean, go check out the website for more info... i think they have a pretty interesting site, and they produce quite a number of tobacco products... if you dun understand korean, then too bad... bah, i kid you... they have a english version for their site too

1305H 8 Apr 2002 - Office jargon...

You know how people use the term "Taichi" in the office, like when your boss or colleagues always pass their work to you? I just learnt a new term in response to that... When my boss/colleague "taichi" work to me, i must "mee siam" away...

Speaking of jargon,
dictionary.com's word of the day for today is "exculpate", which means to clear from alleged fault or guilt...

Speaking of dictionary, a dictionary is the only place where success comes before work...

Speaking of work, i'm back at work in a week that promises to be filled with meetings...

Speaking of meetings, i find myself having to struggle to stay awake during the meetings. Its just so easy to fall asleep...

Speaking of sleep, i just had lunch and feel like sleeping now... but got work to do... sian...

Speaking of sian, well... it just reminds of the word siam...

Speaking of siam, i must improve my
taichi skills to get others to do my job and mee siam when work comes my way...

If my boss or colleagues reads this, there will be no way for me to
exculpate myself, so you better keep your mouth shut, comprendete?

1546H 6 Apr 2002 - Flying bullets...

Smashing Pumpkin's
Bullet with Butterfly Wings... That song kicks serious ass... bringing that up coz i've been listening to the pumpkin's "Rotten Apples" album lately...

And prior to that, i was listening to
Pulp's "This is Hardcore" album... other than the minor radio hit Help the Aged (another ass-kicker), that album is full of jems... but i especially liked TV Movie... (Note: Pls do not read the lyrics whilst listening to the songss, as requested by the band)

A good place to check out videos by the pumpkins is
launch.com... i think... anyone can tell me where to find Pulp videos?

1613H 5 Apr 2002 - Countdown to weekends...

I am bored in the office right now. the whole department went out for a 2-hour plus lunch at
Raffles Town Club. felt very sleepy after that... lunch was quite shiok, but looking at the people there, i felt rather underdressed in my t-shirt and jeans... (hey, its casuals at Motorola on Fridays, but then again, i can be casual anyday. i have yet to wear long-sleeve shirt and pants to office, not even for interview) guess its just one of those places that i wun feel fully comfortable in. most if not all of their restaurants have dress codes, and what with what i am wearing today, i would have failed most of them... the high-life just somehow isn't for me right now. maybe later...

Oh no! am i sounding like a sour grape? whatever... come to think of it, if you were obscenely rich and have all the time in the world to spare, what would you do with your time? what would i do? well... right now i can't think of anything... i guess i will probably just be doing nuthin... being too rich or/and too free can be a drag, dun you think? i'm glad i'm poor and struggling in my life so that my time is used more constructively... bleah

1022H 5 Apr 2002 - Why we go to school...

A couple of interesting quotes i stumbled across...

"Education must have an end in view, for it is not an end in itself"

- Sybil Marshall (She is a prominent author of books on education, as well as a novelist towards the later part of her life)

"Never let formal education get in the way of your learning"

- Mark Twain (If you have had some formal education, you should have learnt who Mark Twain is by now)

I find a lot of validity in those 2 statements... I guess i just dun see the point in the mindless pursuit of good grades in subjects that we may never ever have to put to pratical use in our lives after schooling... Its just a parental/peer pressure cum rat-race syndrome that drives most people to try to get good grades. I guess for most, the end would be to try to get a well-paying job with whatever good qualifications they attained. the rationale is better grades=higher pay. sadly, it is not always true. the world doesn't work in such simple equations.

Personally, i guess the reason why i try to do well is basially to keep my parents happy, to meet the requirements of my study award, as well as to get a degree so that i can get a somewhat higher pay. I'm a slacker, so i dun always aim for the highest score, but i do find that my best grades come from the subjects i find the most interesting (yes, there are actually interesting modules in NUS! amazing but true!) yada yada blah blah blah

The Singapore education system places too much emphasis on knowledge, and not enough on thinking. i guess thats why usually muggers do best in exams. flooding the mind with facts and figures is not learning. i guess learning is not easy to fully define, but i feel a main part of learning is that the student must put in effort to find out things, rather than let the teachers do the spoon-feeding. Also, learning is not restricted to schoolbooks and texts, rather, learning takes place all the time in and out or school. Smelling a rose is learning the scent of roses. Helping a blind man cross a busy road is learning kindness. Having a meal at Taco Bell is learning never to go back there again...

I guess the gist of the 2 quotes taken together could mean that education and learning are actually 2 separate entities. Undeniably, education is necessary in life, but it should be the means to an end, rather than the end to the means. Learning on the other hand should be a lifelong process that doesn't start nor end with school. It takes place all the time... and one shouldn't let what is taught in school close one's mind to other possibilities...

Moral of this entry: Why should i spoon-feed it to you? Can't you learn it for yourself? bleah

Note: I am not making any political/sociological/philosophical statement nor trying to throw bricks at my teachers(i have had some very inspiring and caring teachers) I am merely sharing my thoughts on the 2 quotes i stumbled across. i dun usually think, so this is a rare occasion for me. Applause now.

ps:
The Royal Tenenbaums is a witty, quirky, somewhat irrelevent yet ultimately heartwarming film about a family of geniuses(yes i think all the family members, including the dad and mum are geniuses in their own right, though the film does not play up on that part) learning to cope with their lives, the relationships with one another, and their personal issues. I enjoyed it very much... though it may not suit everyone's palette...

1000H 4 Apr 2002 - Health warning...

Received an email from a friend abt this chemical called Aspartame that is found in most artificial sweeteners. It is supposedly like a slow-acting poison with many dangerous effects. Did a bit of searching on the net, and though there are some who still claim it is harmless, and therefore still available on the market, there are also many sites that claim its danger. Hoax or real? you decide. Aspartame is found in stuff such as Nutrasweet, Diet Coke/Pepsi, and many sugar-free mints. Fishermen, beware! It is an ingredient in Fisherman's Friends!!! I think i will stay away from that for the time being...

Seems like there are just more and more food items that should be avoided... Help! What's there left for us to eat?

1141H 1 Apr 2002 - Final farewell...

Well, folks its been a good 3-4 months online for me... i've enjoyed the experience of being able to write about myself and other assorted junk to put up on the web for people like you to read. It has been at times therapeutic, at times fun and crazy... whatever it is, thanks for making it a wonderful experience for me... I have decided to stop blogging... so long...

Happy April Fool's..
.
Nuthin down here... sorry for the wasted trip
