JOURNAL 3:
THE MORALITY OF JESUS
1. The key idea about the Morality of Jesus presented in this section is that Jesus was very unorthodox during his time with his teachings. JEsus taught his basic moral standards at the Sermon on the Mount, and I believe that these teachings were the key to this section. He told the people at the time to love their enemies as they would love their own family, to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and clothe the naked. These were very strange to hear at the time, because the common teaching was to look out for oneself and ones family. And I think the key teachings of Jesus' morality was to truly be a good person, one must put themselves second, and others first. People were't used to hearing this talk of loving enemies ,and such, and thus weren't always taking to his teachings. But I think through all of that, these were the bread and buter of Jesus' Morality.
2. These are three ideas that I would like to come away from this week remembering. The first comes from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. I think its an obvious one but it gets overlooked way too much. Its when Jesus says to love your enemies. I find that far too often I make fun of the people that aren't nesscerily my enemies, and put them down instead of trying to raise them up and make them feel better. The second thing I would like to remember comes from C.S. Lewis's "Mere Christanity". It comes from the 'Reality of the Law' section of the article, and says that while the moral standards we must follow are good, they are often not the most desireable things to do. I always find myself in these kinds of situations, and more often than not I end up doing the wrong thing, and pay for it later. I want to remember to make sure to start doing what I know to be right more often. And finally, the last thing I would like to remember about the section is the strength and courage that the villagers from Le Chambon had. I would like to remember this as inspiration for myself when I get into situations where I need that same strength and courage. These villagers reall yamazed me while I was hearing them talk in the film "Weapons of the Spirit" about them risdking their lives for a just cause and for what they believe in. That really stuck out to me. So finally these are the the three things that I would like to remember from this section.
