Violent Fuckwits bond for Belfast (Billy Riot)
THE VIOLENT FUCKWITS
BT14

Front Page, Belfast
28th August 2007

I billed this on the poster as “who’s the punk rock daddys” which it seems might just have
been a little prophetic? This was a fairly low key Tuesday night gig but for the Violent
Fuckwit’s a first outing after 11 months of inactivity and one day of being broken up!

BT14 have been gigging quite frequently of late and the local scene more than needs a pop tinged punk band to
counter balance all the rest of the angry mob doing the rounds. Despite their bassist sending a sick note at the
last minute they got in a capable replacement and subsequently played a good if somewhat short set. Vocalist
Toni has noticeably grown in stage confidence and looks a little like Goldy Locks fronting a punk band. Their self
penned tunes for me work better than the covers particularly opener “Lullaby Lie” and “Another Bloody Interface”
a tune about the joys of living in the quaint leafy
suburb that is Belfast’s Ardoyne. Versions of
SLF and
Undertones songs were ok if a little predictable but
the over-riding impression is that the band are going
the right way.

There is probably an insulting big word for anyone
who reviews their own band but whatever it is it
seems I now am one.
The Violent Fuckwits from
the gun played a charged frenetic set, bursting with
enthusiasm and tongue in cheek anger. From opener
“All Out Offensive” through to a curtailed finale` with
the gloriously infamous “Wankin in Work”
the
Fuckwits
reintroduced themselves to the admittedly
small crowd in fuckin` style even if I say so myself!
Covers of
Ramones, Damned, P.A.I.N., Discharge
songs and an impromptu unrehearsed version of
Runnin` Riot’s “Judge Jury Executioner” all in there
somewhere and though and behold we’re back!
The last song saw the bass going on the blink and a
busted skin on the bass drum, a minutes chaos and
Colm from
the Troubles borrowed Chris’s guitar and
gave us his romantic troubadour bit treating us to a
couple of ahh love song type things!

Just what Tuesday nights are for though sadly
BT14
announced they split the next day! Hopefully they
will have a change of mind in the days to come as the
more punk bands Belfast has the better!
