What About That

Queens Hall Nuneaton, UK
Sunday
23rd April 2006

One of me oldest mates Buckley Bonehead is in town so I'm in a great mood, get to work on me Mohawk mid day and were out the door. Take a little detour for a few tins and set off for the venue in high spirits. It seems that I got the start time of the gig wrong because as we get inside the first band on the bill were a couple of songs away from the end of their set. They're a local Nuneaton band that only got the call at the last minute as the Effers pulled out because someone made a cock up on the way their name was spelt. Any way this band that go under the name of What About That have only been together for four months forming a band at their local college, and here they are playing with the big guns. But from what little I got to hear, they needed a little more work but they're still in the early days and with time they could be the talk of the town! A couple of things I did like about this band was it was a three piece and Vocals and Bass were taken up by females. Lau the bass player you never know could be the next Gaye Advert.

Second on the bill was
The Blunts from Pete's little neck of the woods Wolverhampton. James their vocalist seems to be a real showman for the crowd and song after song he does his stuff. But to me from start to finish it seemed like they were playing they same track R.A.MO.N.E.S style 1234 at breakneck speed. A little into the set I got bored and fucked off to the bar, just in time I hasten to add, because Buckley Boneheads brother Simon arrives to get the drinks in.

The next band up were the
Red Light Rippers from Canada. And they should have stayed across the pond. Punk Rock this was not! They looked like the New York Dolls and sounded like some Glam band. If I wanted Glam music I'd go to a Glam Rock show. They were good at what they did but wrong billing for this moaning fuck job. Punk Rock is what I came to see and not a walking talking Guns and Roses T-Shirt man.

By the time
Goldblade had taken to the stage I'm pissed out me little tree, but this band were on top form. I said to my mate Buckley Bonehead "I know that Vocalist from somewhere?" and I was right, it was John Robb of the Punk Band the Membranes, ('Tatty Seaside Town'). Well here he is again fronting Goldblade and this crowd love it. I only wish I could tell you more about them but they're a new band to me, but they're a band I recommend you go and see if they're in a town near you soon. One thing for sure is that John's a real cool guy on stage and a very friendly one off. He gave me a copy of his CD, 'Strictly Hardcore', (big thanks).

So this is what we came here for,
Mister Matlocks on stage but with no band this is an acoustic (boo hiss - PDC) set from Glen for some reason? It don't really work on those Pistols songs being played in this style, but he plods onwards. I really wanted to like this stuff but it ain't got the power of the Pistols. Glen did do a good version of 'Ghost of Princess in Towers' from his Rich Kids days and its all over, he shoots off back stage. I Try and grab him for a quick chat but he ain't having it! This maybe because what I got told today with me being that pissed that I never recalled saying "Hi!" to Glen when he first came in and he said "that's Mister Matlock to you!", so I called him a pretentious twat (tee hee - PDC). But later he's OK and I get the photo's which I'm after.

To close the show step up the show stoppers the
UK Subs. Charlie and his big bollocks, I love this man to bits! At the age of 61 they sure ain't no stopping Charlie, this man's fit as a fiddle. I found this out myself when he dedicated a song to us and I joined him onstage for a boogie. "123 456 got a review and it goes like this!". I could talk you though it track by track, but what's the point, everything was spot on. Young Jamie on the skins is a little power house to Charlie's word perfect vocals. It's a good job Glen played previous as the Subs yet again walked away with the show. Great night out, come again soon, last words out of Mr Harpers book. "Ooh La La La Ooh La Lay there was a great Punk Rock party down in Nuneaton yesterday!"
