UK Subs The Splitters Queens Hall, Nuneaton, UK Friday 26th August Get the day off to a great start by splitting my trousers but think fuck it, cannot be arsed to go home and changed. So its straight into the boozers and it ain't even mid day! Two or three pints later sod off to sign on, in and out in a flash then straight back to the pub knocking a few more pints down. Really looking forward to seeing Mr Charlie Harper ripping though all the Subs golden oldies. Charlie maybe the oldest swinger in town tonight but for a man of his age he sure ain't ready for the zimmer fame down on the psycho ward just yet. Bump into an old mate of mine and go back to his bedsit and tuck into his vodka, so by now I'm quite rat arsed so head off back to the gig. More beer at the bar and stagger off to watch the first band which to be honest what I could make out seem ok, but not really what I would play if I was at home, so I never really took much notice after that. Chat to Charlie Harper for a little while about the forthcoming film Punk's not Dead the Movie, which the Subs and many other bands will be appearing in. So I take a few pic's and piss off to the bog. By the time I return the Splitters from Leicester have taken to the stage. The most striking thing about the Splitters is their front man Braidley who would put most Mohawks to shame. What I've notice over the last few years is a lot of bands are mixing the Jamaican Ska/Tone Two rhythms into their sound, similar to what Rancid did. However the Splitters do this with finesse and soon get the crowd stomping along. Song after song they deliver their skanking sound to a most appreciated crowd. It seems most of the really old Nuneaton Punks have made it along tonight to see the Subs. And here they are upon stage at long last. They blast out song after song and their hits just keep coming... 'CID', 'I Live In A Car', 'Teenage', 'Warhead' and not forgetting 'Party In Paris' which was played with so much pace that I never realised it was the same song until halfway through the track. But that could also be down to how much that I had drunk that night. To be honest I still can't work out why I was still standing? Maybe its the watered down beer we sell in Nuneaton, who knows? (funny that coz we got the same problem here in Wolves - PDC). The UK Subs have played Nuneaton many times before, but last night they were fucking amazing! Where Charlie gets the energy from beats me, but if I'm that energetic when I'm his age things sure will be fine. Most people stagger home probably reliving the night the Subs came to town. But me I get chatting to Charlie at the Bar with Andy McGrath the singer with reformed Skinhead band The Crux which also hail from my home town of Nuneaton. Sadly its soon booting out time and there the story ends, or is it..Till the next time the Subs come to town...those immortal words can only be left to Charlie Harper, the man that will always be "Teenage..................."
