Misfits
Limelight Belfast 15.7.04

I made my way down to Belfast city centre from the outer reaches
of Antrim last Thursday evening to catch a rare visit from those very
frequently name checked and influential American punks...
the Misfits. The
Limelight was packed with loads of mohicans and birds in mini-skirts and
big boots. It was a bit like going back in time. There was a good atmosphere
but band wise there was something lacking. The three support bands (
The
Dangerfields, Karloff and No Less My Life
) did nothing for me. In fact
they were shit if I'm being honest!

The Misfits these days are a bit like our local punk super group $hame
Academy
in a way. By this I mean you've got members out of three BIG
punk bands, in this case from the USA (
The Misfits, Black flag and the
Ramones
) playing together. I don't think they should call themselves the
Misfits
though, as it’s slightly misleading. They are not playing a full on
Misfits show. It would be a similar situation again to the $hame Academy
camp if they decided to play under the Rudi or Outcasts brand names. It wouldn't be either band and wouldn't be accepted by the punk purists.
The band played a good selection of Misfits and Ramones songs (probably more Ramones surprisingly) plus a few covers. Tonight in my opinion the Misfits sacrificed quality for speed, running through songs at 200mph. Far faster than the originals which kind of spoiled it for me. At such a speed the songs were just becoming a blur and begining to all sound pretty much the same. Having said that, the kids in the audience seemed to love it and they got a great response. I have to say that the Sabrejets version of ‘Blitzkreig Bop‘ is far better. Though the Misfits punked up cover of Del Shannon's ‘Runaway‘ was one of the night’s highlights. 15th of July was Marky Ramones birthday and Jerry Only presented him with a birthday cake on stage, and got the band and audience to join together in a rendition of that old punk standard ‘Happy birthday‘ which was interesting!
