Terra's Story
Terra Branford is the daughter of an Esper man and a human woman. When the Esper
World was raided by the emperor, her parents died and she was brought back to Vector. Controlled by the slave crown, she became an imperial soldier, her powers used for destruction. However, after a meeting with the esper Tritoch and the removal of the slave crown, her life begins anew.

Locke's Story
Locke Cole was a "treasure hunter" from the town of Kohlingen. He was betrothed to a girl named Rachel, but after an accident in which she lost her memory, her angry father would not permit him to see her and he left. During his absence, Rachel was killed, and Locke regrets not being there to protect her. This guilt makes him overly protective of his friends, especially Celes.

Edgar's Story
King Edgar of Figaro is a powerful asset to the Returner cause, although on the surface he feigns an alliance with the Empire. A self-defined ladies' man (although the ladies say otherwise), he is skilled with machinery, making him
a useful ally to the Returners as a person, not only a king.

Sabin's Story
Sabin Rene Figaro is
the younger twin brother of Edgar. After losing a coin toss for the kingdom, he leaves and studies martial arts with the world's greatest martial arts master, Duncan. He joins the returner cause after saving Terra and her friends from fellow disciple Vargas.

Celes' Story
Celes Chere was "augmented" with the powers of the Espers at a young age. She was raised by the good-hearted scientist Cid. As she grew older, she went on to become one of the Empire's three generals, along with Leo and Kefka.
Celes, however, has had a change of heart and turned to the rebel side. She is taken prisoner in South Figaro but, after being later rescued by Locke, she joins with the Returners.

Shadow's Story
Little is known about mercenary Shadow at first. Accompanied by Intercepter, a fierce black dog, he is rumored to be heartless enough to "slit his mama's throat for a nickel." He fights both for the Returner and Empire causes, and seems to have no loyalty to anyone except his dog and perhaps Relm...

Cyan's Story
Cyan Garamonde has been a loyal retainer to the king of Doma and his father before him for his entire lifetime. However, his life was shattered
when Kefka poisoned the people of Doma, including Cyan's wife and son. The angry Cyan has sworn vengeance on the Empire, and joins Sabin on his journey back to Narshe to find the Returners.

Gau's Story
Gau the wild boy has been living on the Veldt almost his entire lifetime. Kicked out by his crazy father, he was brought up by the animals and
learned to fight as they did. After Sabin and Cyan feed him, he decides to help them out and eventually goes back with them to join the Returners (although it is unlikely he understands what they are fighting for).

Setzer's Story
Setzer Gabbiani is a wealthy man making money off his traveling casino-airship. The Returners, in need of his airship, trick him into helping them by having Celes pose as his love interest, the opera singer Maria. After
another deception involving a coin with two heads, he agrees to fly them to the Empire.

Strago's Story
Strago Magus is an old townsperson from Thamasa who is actually descended from a race of Magicite-infused mages of a thousand years before. He
tries to hide this fact from Terra and her friends, but after a fire which puts his granddaughter, Relm, in danger, he agrees to help them.

Relm's Story
Relm Arrowny is a mischievous ten-year-old with an amazing talent for art. When her grandfather, Strago, decides to help Terra and Locke find the
Espers, she sneaks along. After much whining on her part, Strago finally agrees to let her join the Returners.

Mog's Story
Mog is the unofficial leader of the Narshe moogles, fluent in the language of humans despite an occasional added 'Kupo!' After the Esper Ramuh appeared to him in a dream, he decides to help the Returners. As a talented
dancer, he is a useful addition to their team.
