Mysterious Ways

Summary: I, ah. Heh. I wrote an Oz/Dr Who drabble, as inspired by glossing's First Lines Meme here. She posted the first lines of all her fic and challenged people to write a ficlet or a drabble based on one of them. This is mine.

Oz went to Scotland seeking peace, but, in the way of things, found war instead.

Just how the entire prison managed to get transported to the desolate Highlands in the dead of night was anyone's guess, but the inmates knew better than to look a gift horse in the mouth. All except for one.

"This is no gift from Allah," Adebesi said, the fingers of one large hand curling around the bars of the prison kitchen window. "This is the work of the devil."

Said only smiled impenetrably. "Mysterious ways, my brother. Mysterious ways."

"It is freezing here. And what is that smell?"

"That is the grass. The wind. The rain and the sea. That is the smell of a new world."

Adebesi sucked hard on his toothpick. "I don' like it. But it don' matter." He gripped the iron bar until his knuckles bled white. "A new world perhaps, but we're still in Oz. Still in this fucking place."

They watched as beneath them in the exercise yard, yellow dust matted down with the constant light drizzle, figures appeared. Marching figures, walking two-by-two. Clad in black leather and carrying guns. Very impressive, very destructive, very deadly-looking guns.

Said's eyes lit up. "Perhaps things are about to change."

They set off at a run, taking stairs two at a time, leaping over the bodies of unconscious guards, only to arrive in the middle of a crowd of yelling, jeering inmates and... a talking rhinoceros.

"Language previously assimilated," the rhino was saying. "Designation: Earth English. You will be catalogued."

It was Adebesi's turn to smile, a hungry, welcoming smile of things yet to come. "Maybe you were right, brother," he said, tapping Said's chest with the back of his hand and pointing to the gun the rhino was carrying. "Mysterious ways."

For those few, those glorious few of you who have got this far and are a little confused... Oz is both Daniel "Oz" Osbourne from Buffy, and, in this case, The Oswald State Correctional Facility (see, it's funny coz I punned) and the talking rhinos are actually Judoon, a race of rhinocerous-headed humanoids who appeared in the Doctor Who episode Smith and Jones. Splaney = good? Anyone? ... Hello?
