Midnight Faith's fanfiction tips:

  1. Write characters and/or pairings you know, love and feel comfortable with.
  2. It's so true. Decide on the character you want to write. It can be because you like that character know him/her inside out or even better you can relate to that character. It's your choice whether or not you're going to ship them with another character. If you do, do it because you actually want that pair together or you know the other half of the pair really well. And the most important thing is you feel comfortable writing your character/pairing.

Confused? Here's my example: I think Lilah's a great character because she's so mysterious and deep. I want to write fic about her, her interactions with people around her and her past. I also think she's perfect for Lindsey. You only have to watch 'Redefinition' to know why.

  3. Watch relevant episodes.
  4. Once you've decided on your character/ pairing watch episodes that have high content on that character/ pairing or are that character/ pairing centric. If you're writing pairing fic you effectively have to watch three lots of episodes. One for your first character, one for your second and one for shippy moments.

Example: I write Lilah/Lindsey fic. So in my first lot I'm gonna watch Lilah centric episodes: The Ring and Untouched. My second lot is City of… Dear boy, Darla, The Trial and Epiphany. My third lot is Five by Five, Sanctuary, Blind Date, To shanshu in LA, Judgement, Reunion, Redefinition, Blood Money, Reprise and Dead End.

  5. Take notes.
  6. Watch every episode at least twice. First just watch it through but take note of scenes with your character/ pairing. In your second run through make notes on your character (s.) Take notes on speech and patterns, movements and gestures, personality traits, camera angles, reactions to other characters and situations. You can just write a list of completely random things down that strike you about an episode.

Example: Here's my notes for 'Untouched' on Lilah: Apartment no. 102. Lives in a semi-classy part of town. Why? She has a lot of money. Is it to be close or far away from someone or something? Has an obsession with laundry. Why? Blood oath with Bethany. As in vampiric blood oath? Lilah's not necessarily human never seen her out in the sunlight etc. Sleeping powder. How does she plan to use it and on who? What does Bethany's reference 'You got out,' refer to? She has a classy flip phone. Shows money she has, typical businesswoman stereotype. Lots of people under her at Wolfram and Hart, which associates to her power. Angel says he knows her? How does he know her? What does he know about her? Where does he know her from? Why does he know her? He also says 'She's not what she pretends to be.'

Make sure you make your own notes and don't just sponge from someone else. Everyone perceives actions and words differently and you might want to relate quotes back to your ship.

  7. Research.
  8. This is where the Internet kicks in. You'll want to research your character/ pairing. Starting point: Buffysearch- a Buffy and Angel search engine (http://www.buffysearch.com) search once through for each of your characters then for shipper sites.

Example: First you'd search for Lilah. The only Lilah centric site I know of is I look good in Diamonds (http://lovelilah.homestead.com). There's a few Lindsey sites but Christian Kane.net is probably the best (http://www.christiankane.net) and for Lindsey and Lilah sites? Ace of Harts is currently the only one in the world! Oh yes! We're number one!

  9. Read relevant fan fic.
  10. And read everything that relates to your character/ pairing. Spend literal hours blitzing huge databases and don't moan. Be grateful when you find *the* greatest fic for your character/ pairing. Starting points: Fanfiction.net is the biggest fan fic resource for any fandom on the net. (http://www.fanfiction.net) Slayer fan fic is the biggest online resource of Buffy and Angel stories (though heavy on the Buffy http://www.slayerfanfic.com) The official BtVS writer's guild has nearly 50 zones now (http://www.dymphna.net/btvswritersguild)

Read a variety of fic all different ratings and genres right across the scale just to get a feel for what you like and dislike.

Example: First you'd search fanfiction.net for Lilah. There's a fab story called 'Note to Self' by Jana Kay and it's great. A real insight in Lilah. Then search for Lindsey. There's a lot Lindsey stories here… I just can't remember anything relevant. And then you'd search for Lilah/Lindsey fic. There's a few here- I think it's all by me actually. Then check the BtVS writer's guild. The Lindsey zone Legalease (http://www.obsessedmuch.net/legalease) is fab and run by the goddess of Lindsey fic- Lar. The Lindsey/Lilah zone is actually this one!

  11. Write feedback.
  12. All authors love feedback- like chocolate. So make sure if you read a really great fic or come across a really great site you tell the author/ webmaster. They *do* appreciate it no matter how great their story/site is and no matter how many people tell them that. If you *really* love an author nominate them in one of the many awards sites that give out prizes for outstanding fanfiction.

  13. Join the mailing lists
  14. There's no better way to get an insight into a character/ ship than by joining a mailing list dedicated to them. It'll inspire you and there's a group of like-minded people who are potential beta readers, question answerers and friends! Yahoo! Groups is a good site to browse through. (http://groups.yahoo.com) but it does require you to have a Yahoo! ID. Choose active sites with high member counts and lots of fan fic.

Example: First search is for Lilah. I find a group for her simply called 'Lilah.' (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lilah) Second search is for Lindsey. There's a few groups dedicated to him but I'm gonna choose 'Lindsey fic,' cos that's what we're interested in. (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lindseyfic) and then I'm gonna look for a group dedicated to Lindsey and Lilah. (http://groups.yahoo.com/aceofharts)

  15. Get inspired.

Keep watching the episodes again until you know it word for word and all the camera angles on all your characters and the exact moment when their eye twitches etc. This is the sort of insight you need to be able to write them properly. Keep taking those notes too. I've watched 'Blind date' at least 20 times and whenever I watch it I spot something new. New sites are always popping up all over the net so make sure you keep searching. Bookmark your faves and visit regularly. Keep reading new fan fic, keep sending feedback. Make sure you take an active part in your mailing list.
