The best of times and the worst of times for Nesquehoning. The town took on a new look. Citizens formed groups and wanted changes, they picked as their slogan "Watch Us Grow." Businesses on Catawissa Street started to installed concrete sidewalks, home owners were asked to clean up around their houses and paint them. the streets were repaired and garbage collection was started. One of the worst years for Nesquehoning was probably 1918 when a "flu" epidemic hit town. Hundreds of people contracted the disease. There were many deaths each day, whole families died from the Spanish influenza. Undertakers were required to place signs on the doors of residences of fatalities.
