          “Ahou…”

Sano jumped a little and glanced away from the window to look at his lover of fourteen months. Hajime Saitou lounged on the bed, covered from the waist down with blankets, watching him with puzzled, golden eyes.

          “What’s wrong?”

Sano blinked then shook his head. He crawled away from the window and snuggled beside Saitou. “Nothing, man.” he murmured.

The cop raised an eyebrow at that but didn’t say anything.

“What were you sayin’ again?” Sano asked after awhile.

Saitou snorted. “I’m leaving for Hokkaido next week. Official business.”

Sano tucked his head under Saitou’s neck, nodding but his eyes were gazing blankly out the window. “Sure, man. It’s not like I own you or anything…”

“What does that mean?” Saitou demanded, catching the underlying accusing tones in Sano’s mumble.

Sano ignored the question and remained quiet.

“Sano…” Saitou nudged him a little. The roosterhead remained quiet, his breathing slowing. Saitou growled a bit then gave up, pulling Sano closer and drifting off to sleep.

Sano remained awake, staring at nothing.

“How’s the wedded bliss?” Katsu  teased as Sano slumped down the dojo steps.

          The roosterhead snorted. “Fine.”

Kenshin smiled. “I’m happy for you, Sano. You’re very lucky to have someone like Sai…”

“Lucky?” Sano echoed. He was about to say something more when he seemed to remembered something and shut his mouth. “Yeah, I’m one lucky ahou.”

Katsu and Kenshin glanced at each other. “Is something the matter, Sano?” Kenshin prodded and Sano sighed.

“Everything’s fine, man. “ he said, almost to himself. “Everything’s just peachy.”

          Katsu’s eyes narrowed. “Where’s Saitou?”

“To Hokkaido. Had business.” the roosterhead almost mumbled.

Kenshin stood up from his seat and nodded at Katsu. “I’ll go make us some tea.” he said and moved towards the house.

Katsu waited until Kenshin was gone before sitting beside Sano, who seemed to have forgotten he was there and was staring off into space.

          “Hey, Sano. What’s up?”

Sano glance at him and took a deep breath. “Y’know what?”

Katsu leaned back on his hands, getting comfortable. “What?”
The young man sighed again and began to toy with the strands of his red bandanna. “Y’know, sometimes I think having a relationship with someone…” another sigh, “… someone like Hajime isn’t all about fun and  great sex…”

Katsu almost smiled at that. “What is it about then?”

Sano glanced at him, as if he hadn’t even thought about that question. “Well, man…” he started, thinking a bit. “I think it’s about… commitment and well, y’know stuffs like assurance and trust and all that shit.”

“But, isn’t that what you have?” Katsu asked, not wanting to admit he didn’t even know what the hell Sano was talking about but assuming that it’s the same thing in a relationship between a man and a woman.

“That’s just it!” Sano exploded. “All I have is Hajime and great sex! I have no fucking idea if he’ll dump me when someone… better than me comes along and…”

“Sano…” Katsu cut-off. “You’ve been living with Saitou for over a year. Why think that now?”

Sano stared, unbelieving, at Katsu then exhaled, exasperatedly. “Why?” he almost whispered.

          Katsu blinked.

Sano looked away. “Because… I’m not sure Hajime’s entirely mine, y’know what I mean?”

Katsu spied something in the corner of his eye but ignored it.

Sano was shaking his head. “I think it’s ridiculous, really. And it’s stupid of me to think this way. Acting like some lovesick girlfriend.” he chuckled a bit then sighed again. “But, I get scared sometimes, man. I think that one day, Hajime will tell me I don’t matter anymore and kick me out. But what scares me the most… is knowing I really have no hold over him and I’d have to go when he tells me to. I know I’d be pleading and all that shit but Hajime wouldn’t even listen…”

          “Sano…”

Sano’s laugh was ironic. “You think he’ll even remember me? The great-fuck-Sano. All he had to do was say ‘kneel’ and I’d be begging for…”

“That’s not true, Sano. The cop loves you.” Katsu tried to reason out. “I don’t think he’d even let you a foot near him or live with him, for that matter, if all he wanted was some sex.” he added, dryly. “I wouldn’t.”

Sano chortled at that, then sighed again. “ Yeah, you’re right…”

“And besides, we’re you’re assurance, Sano. We’d gang up on him if he decides he’s gotten enough of your ugly mug.”

“Thanks, man.” Sano said, sarcastically. “That’s very reassuring.”

Katsu laughed and patted Sano on the back. “Hey, what are friends are for?”

Sano shook his head and Kenshin went out, a bit tentative. “You guys ready for some tea?”

          Sano nodded. “Bring it on.”

Cho cowered against the corner, his eyebrow twitching. “B-boss? I thought you went to Hokkaido?”

Saitou’s narrow amber eyes narrowed even more. “I was going but I forgot something, does that answer your question?”

Cho nodded, frantically and swallowed hard. “Uh, are you g-going now?” the last words ended in a squeak as Saitou towered over him, pissed. “B-boss?”

“I want you to do something for me.”

Cho nodded, both gray eyes wide with fear.

“And you will do it or die.”

          Cho gulped.

“And if you mess up, you will die an even more painful death.”

          Cho whimpered.

“Whaaaa!” Sano burped and lauged. “I still beat you at one thing, Kenny!”

Katsu laughed with him as Kenshin fell on the floor, his eyes going round and round. “Way t’go, Sano!”

Megumi shook her head, jilted. “Men.” she huffed.

          “Aw, c’mon…” Katsu slurred. “It’s loverboy’s birthday!”

This elicited yells from the younger kids and Sano grinned, cheekily.

“Hey, guys!” Kaoru yelled from outside. “We have more guests! Make some room.”

“It’s Cho.” said a surprised Yahiko and the older males sat up straighter, intrigued. How did Cho know it was Sano’s birthday today?

Cho was looking sheepish as he went inside. “I’m here to deliver a present… from the Boss.”

          “Hajime?” Sano asked, excited.

Cho nodded and went out again. They all waited, impatiently and watched as Cho struggled with a package almost as big as him. He waved off helpers and was breathless as he managed to bring the package before Sano’s wide-eyed gaze.

Cho wiped hi forehead. “Whew!” he puffed out and kicked the box. “Hey, Yoshi-boy! Don’t do that!” he yelled and shushed at Yahiko’s confused protest.

“There ya go, Roosterhead. Happy birthday.”

Sano nodded and studied the present. It was huge! The box almost reached his shoulders and was a foot wide, covered in pale blue crepe paper and had a blue ribbon on top. Sano nibbled his lips, truly excited and reached for the ribbon and with it came a card..

Ahou,

                   You needed assurance.

                   You’ll get assurance.

                                                H. S.

Sano was feeling giddy and not even the abrupt message on the card dampened his mood. “Hajime…” it was spoken with gentleness. “You guys realize… this is ‘Jime’s first gift for me.” he told the others.

This was answered with cheers and Sano’s grinned widened. He carefully peeled off the wrappings and took a deep breath as he pulled open the box’s flap.

          “Happy birthday, ahou.”

Sano’s jaw dropped, as well as the others as Saitou stepped out of the box and faced Sano’s dumfounded stare.

Cho went to Sano and handed him a pen and a clipboard. “If you would just sign over here please.”

Sano blinked and did as he was told.

“Thank you.” Cho said and took the pen. “Enjoy your present.”

Saitou smirked. “Well, here I am, Sano. Signed, sealed, delivered. I’m yours.”

Sano felt the sting in his eyes and blinked them, rapidly. “Y-you sure, man..” he asked, voice shaking.

Saitou glanced at the others in the room. “ Party’s over. You can go through that door.”

          “Hey! This is my house…”

“Na, Kaoru,” Kenshin coaxed. “We should leave them alone.”

Sano was wiping at his eyes as everyone filed out then looked up to see Saitou staring at him with a smoldering golden eyes.

          “’Jime…”

Saitou cleared his throat, almost nervously and smiled a tiny smile  at him. “I wanted to say… that you need not fear anything.”

          “Hajime…”

“Don’t interrupt me, ahou. I have a speech all laid out and…”

Sano shook his head, his hand over Saitou’s mouth. “You don’t need it, ‘Jime… I don’t need words…”

Saitou had surprise in his eyes as Sano moved closer to him. “You’re all I need, ‘Jime. I love you.”

Saitou’s face softened and he held Sano, tightly. “Same here, ahou.”

The roosterhead socked him. “That’s all I get? Same here, ahou? What a birthday present, man. Wheee…” he muttered dryly.

Saitou chuckled and kissed his forehead. He stepped back a bit, his hand darting in the box and he pulled out something.

“Here you go.” Saitou murmured and presented him with a much smaller box and Sano raised an eyebrow at him. “There isn’t some mini-Hajime in here, is there?”

Saitou pushed at his shoulders. “Open it.”

Sano grinned and undid the wrappings.

          “Oh.” he choked out.

The cop’s eyes glowed. “It’s the rave in Europe, I’m told. It’s a fad among distinguished ladies and…”

“’Jime!” Sano cried out and pulled Saitou for the a wet kiss. “It’s great, man. I love it.”

Saitou actually flushed. “Really? Well, put it on or something…”

Sano smiled. “You do…” he said and held out the necklace at Saitou. The cop took a deep breath and clasped the necklace behind Sano’s neck.

“Looks cool, man.” Sano murmured, touching the ornate pendant.

Saitou took the pendant and unclasped it. Inside were the Kanji for their names and Sano’s chocolate eyes softened in surprise. “I like it…”

Saitou nodded. “Good, because I’m part of that gift. You want that, you take me with it. “

Sano chortled. “I’ll take you anytime.”

The cop kissed him on the forehead. “We should get out of here. Because, I think I’d like to take you now.”

Sanosuke laughed, giddily and nuzzled his throat. “Thanks, Hajime. This is the best birthday ever.”

“And now…” Saitou insisted. “I’d like to take you home. You haven’t thanked me properly enough.”

The birthday boy grinned, wickedly. “Oh, I will, man. I will.”
