There are many islands surrounding our traditional territory. On
these island there are many huge boulders that form caves of
different shapes and sizes. It was in one of these boulder caves on
Saltspring Island that they found the wolf cubs. They like the cubs
were to young to know the danger here for they proceeded into the
cave and gathered up the dark furred wolves in a day pack they had
with them. They hauled the cubs back down Mt. Maxwell to their
Grandfathers home at Fulford Harbor. Their Grandfather was a very
wise soul and his family had settled in the valley many years ago.
His grandfather had married a Cowichan Women and together they had
shared the teachings of long ago. He was in his smoke house when he
heard the faint cry of the wolf echoing through the valley following
the course of the stream which runs into his protected harbor. He
stopped and listened to be sure of what he felt his wife joined him
on the smoke house porch and didnt say a word. She just looked around
for their children and together they turned their heads as again they
heard the sound of the wolf. It seemed to be getting closer. He picked
up his rifle and she went to the children to see what they were doing
and when she saw what they had done she called for her husband to
join her. The wolfs crys were getting closer and although they had a
clear view up the valley to the mountain they were unable to see any
thing but a large brown deer zigzagging its way towards their cabin.
Without talking the husband and wife gatherd up the small wolf pups
and sent their own children to the safety of their home. The Wolfs
were very close now and their calls were very loud and clear. They
walked the deer down the grassy knoll and onto the white shelled
beach and then they sat silently on the grassy ridge above the
harbor. Together they walked to the edge of the ridge and there they
released the cubs who started scurrying their way up the ridge
towards their parents. They were close enough now to look into the
steel grey eyes of the male wolf who never looked away after the cubs
were safely back in the mothers care he seemed to nod his head and
turn his gaze towards the deer which was standing mesmerized in the
shallow water. They turned to look at the deer and when they looked
back the family of wolves was no where to be seen it was as if they
had traded this deer for their children.
