| Oh Pet Snake O Mine by © moon_grace Ok, I was young, we weren't allowed pets. I came to realise some animals are easily hidden from "Mother." Like I said, a crayfish can live in an empty drawer til they jump out and disappear. A turtle CAN live in a box in the closet! It's true! I used to pop the screen out of my window and climb out on the roof. Me and the turtle- -he liked it. Squinted a lot, though. That thing about biting and not turning loose til lightening strikes...I don't know...I never did REALLY believe that one but I was careful when I scratched his head, just in case. And I told you that if you're really good with your eyes, you'll see the hoppy toads (tree frogs) when they come out when it's getting to be night. And if you're quick, they're pretty kewl to catch. Pee on ya every time, though. Ya get used to it. But a snake....ahhhh. The most beautiful snake! Had the prettiest markings on him. I had him for a few weeks and took him out of his drawer every day to let him crawl up my arm. My dresser was home to a lot of critters in those days. Finally, finally, I begged my dad...Come and see this snake I got! (Mom had the no pet rule, not him.) SO, finally after a few days of badgering, we climb the steps to my room upstairs. I was so proud. Took out the little snakey and was showing him to my dad (who was really turning a whiter shade of pale with each second.) Copperhead. Well, Shoot! How's a girl supposed to know these things if nobody mentions them? Nobody ever told me about no triangle head! All I knew at that moment was dead snake. Yup. Dad was not one to put anything off...even murder of a pet. I never told him.... I never told him the snake came from the basement of the old burned out house across the way and that my brother (his dear sweet son) had found a bunch of them under that old burnt house and had put them in a jar. Nope, he never knew I got my snake for free because my brother had a huge inventory...One that he completely sold out at school for fifty cents a pop. SO glad my parents made it through my childhood. heheehehehehehee moon. |
