i went to the farm on the crow river, the one my father owned when i
was young. there was a great crowd there and much hub bub. the people
who now owned this place were dear friends and i could see they were
moving to make way for new owners. or were they? they didn't take
much with them, the bulk of the family had already gone on and only
the father and grandmother remained.

the many ppl i saw were the new "owners". i saw black ppl yellow, red
and some white ppl. and children with beautiful round faces and deep
black eyes. as i went from person to person, offering to help, the
only one who could hear me was the former owner, and so i listened
(while i searched in vain for the book the grama asked me to find)

he told me of their troubles and how they decided it was time to
leave. he said, "our young ones are gone, gone away to the city and
we know they will not return to help us care for this land, and so it
is time for us to leave." i asked why he didn't take their belongings
with them and he just smiled. he gave me his fishing pole and asked
that i find the new owner in the great crowd, and gift the pole to
him. i told him that i would and went about this task reluctantly, as
i knew i would not see him again.

there were many groups of ppl, scurrying about, helping and helping.
making ready for the night. most were staying and all the children
were excited. they would be sleeping in the barn tonight. this was
something they had never done before, everyone here was from the
city.

as i ran from group to group trying to find the owner, i noticed that
most of them could not hear me. i noticed that many of them in each
group, had no ears. when i finally found the owner and tried to Gift
him the fishing pole, he too had no ears for me. one of his daughters
noticed my plight and told me that they had run out of ears and had
to share. her voice was musical and her face was one i could not look
away from. she was about 14 yrs old and i asked her to explain. when
i put on the ears that she handed to me, her voice became that of an
Elder and she began... "there was a village of ppl who did not have
enough ears........."

lesson humbly taken,
