Muscular Dystrophy Association

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is an organization founded in 1950 which combats muscular dystrophy and diseases of the nervous system and muscular system in general by funding research, providing medical and community services, and educating health professionals and the general public.

The MDA is most famous for the nationwide telethon it holds on Labor Day each year. Begun in 1966, it is hosted by Jerry Lewis, who has supported the MDA since its inception. Lewis's support has been so ironclad over the years that children assisted by the MDA are referred to as Jerry's Kids. In 2005, despite the impact of Hurricane Katrina, the annual Labor Day Telethon raised US$54.9 million.

I chose the Muscular Dystropy Association for my Organization of faith. They take on the important role of helping sick and dying people regain hope and strength during their times of pain and doubt. My cousin Ethan was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy 3 years ago, so now I have become very active in this organization. Every year on Labor Day, we head out to Grants Farm for the Jerry Lewis Telethon. Me and my family raise money throughout the year, to go towards MDA. We hold a golf tournament which usually raises about $30,000. and some of the younger kids have a lemonade stand for a day. The lemonade stand usually generates about $1,000.
