Invite the children to wear sweatshirts to this program.  Place orange felt flames on them, and let them practice

Cover, Stop, Drop and Roll

on the carpet, to put the flames out.  When the felt flames have rubbed off, the "fire" is out.

FOUR BUSY FIREFIGHTERS

Four busy firefighters could not retire
Because they might have to put out a fire.
The first one rang a big brass bell.
The second one said, 'It's the Grand Hotel!'
The third one said, 'Down the pole we'll slide.'
The fourth one said, 'Get ready to ride.'
The siren said, 'Get out of the way!'
'We have to put out a fire today!'
The red fire truck sped on to the fire,
As the big yellow flames grew higher and higher.
Swish went the water from the fire-hose spout
And in no time at all the fire was out.

Make four firefighters, bell, large building, fire truck, flames, hose.

Craft:

Make pretend smoke detectors. Take two snack-size paper plates and put one on top of the other. Have the children staple or tape the two plates together and "decorate" them with a red dot or a red sticker. Ask the children to notice the smoke detectors in their classrooms, homes and other buildings. This is a great opportunity to discuss fire safety with the children, and the take-home product is a good reminder for parents to install detectors and to check those batteries!

Special Activity:

Check with your local fire department, to see if they have any early childhood education materials, or if a real firefighter might come with the fire truck.  Children who are at home may not have the chance to go on a field trip to the fire station, the way many preschools do.
