Child #1

Maia

Born September 08, 1994, my first child, Maia, has just turned 7 years old. She attends first grade and is doing well. She loves reading and, in fact, just read her first "chapter book" in October. When she showed me the book I was, to put it mildly, quite impressed. A 150 page journal, written at the third grade level, of a girl who was abducted by Indians and lived with them.

When I asked Maia if she understood it, she said, "Not all the words, but I understood the story. I liked it." She then went on to explain the story to me and she did, indeed, get it.

I know that I am bragging here, but what else is this page for?

She also enjoys soccer and camping. We go camping about 5-7 times annually: me, Maia, and her sister JJ. We leave Charis at home for now. She'll probably start joining us when #4 is born.

At the time of this writing, Maia has been counting down the days on her calendar (each month she draws her own calendar, fills in the dates and important activities) until our next camping trip: this weekend. She's especially excited about this trip because we got a new tent and she's anxious to try it. Also, we're going with my Sunday School class so there should be 15-20 kids close to her age running around the campgrounds to play with.

Maia has played soccer in the P-nut league for 3 years now and really enjoys it. The picture above is from the summer of 2000, getting a water break during a game. She is about ready to begin playing on a team, probably we'll start that next summer. She hasn't tried her hand at baseball yet, but I'm not real sure she's interested in that.

She's also tried her hand at Tap Dancing, Ballet, and Gymnastics. Gymnastics is probably her all-time favorite (but it bores me; so I don't have anything to say on the subject).

She's a good-eater, a good student, and a great kid! She's a wonderful sister to both of her sisters and is very excited about her new bother brother. What more could I ask for?

Oh, yeah. She does a wonderful job sweeping out the cars and getting the trash out. I wish I could get her sister to do it so well.

The bottom picture was taken on our summer camping trip to Tybee Island - off the coast of Georgia, by Savannah - summer of 2001.
