MCSE -
How to become Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer
This page was designed when I was working on my NT 4.0 certifications. Microsoft has since changed to Windows 2000, and I have decided NOT to pursue that track. Instead, I will concentrate on Information Security and Cisco Certifications. These page are therefore outdated :-(
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers are required to pass four
operating system exams and two elective exams. All six exams can be taken without any fomal classroom training. A number of institutions charge thousands of dollars for "hands-on" training. You can invest that money into a decent Pentium machine and some books and become an MCSE in as little as six months.
My recommendation for the Core exams to take and their order is:
Networking Essentials
Windows NT 4.0 WorkStation
Windows NT 4.0 Server
Windows NT 4.0 Server in Enterprise
Select two electives from the following list.
Microsoft TCP/IP
Proxy 2.0
IIS 4.0 (Internet Information Server)
Exchange 5.5
SQL Server
SMS
Most books can be purchased from Amazon.com at up to 40% off. I have placed links to some highly recommended books that I have used.
Please don't forget to try Transcender tests 1-2 days before taking the actual test. Under no circumstances should you try Transcender tests before fully preparing for the real exam.
There are places on the web where you can buy 'used' transcender tests. I will place links to them later.
Here are some site where people have posted questions from the actual exams. Please look at them to get an idea of the type of questions to expect.
