Jesus's Beliefs about Faith

The Calming of the Storm at Sea (Matthew 8: 23-26)
Jesus and his disciples boarded a boat, and a storm began to rage while they were at sea. The disciples became afraid and woke Jesus, begging Him for help. He replied, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” Jesus then calmed the storm and amazed his disciples. What does this reveal about what Jesus believes faith is all about?

The disciples in the boat were afraid that the situation was beyond control and awoke Jesus in a last act of desperation. They feared that they would die and, in a moment of panic, lost their trust in Jesus. He wanted them to have faith in Him, to trust and believe in His power. Jesus correctly viewed their fright as a lack of such faith and slightly chastised them for not believing in Him. He challenges us to trust and believe in Him even when things seem to be going badly.

The Healing of Two Blind Men (Matthew 9: 27-30)
Two blind men followed Jesus and asked for Him to heal them. After hearing them state their belief, He responded, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.” The two men were healed and went on their way. What does this reveal about what Jesus believes faith is all about?

Jesus believes that a disciple must have a strong belief in his/her leader in order to have strong faith. The two men were healed because they believed in Christ. Jesus wants us to embrace our faith and state that we believe in God. He wants us to believe in Him so that when we have problems and difficulties, we can look to God for help and trust that He will be there for us.

The Agony in the Garden (Mark 14: 33-36)
Jesus was very frightened by what he knew was goin to happen; he went to the Garden of Gethsemane with the apostles to pray. After he arrived, he began to pray to the Father, asking Him, “Take this cup away from me, but not what I will but what you will.” What does this reveal about what Jesus believes faith is all about?

Jesus had tremendous faith and believed that the Father would care for Him. He knew that death was coming, and even though He feared it, Jesus still held his faith in the Father. For me, this prayer of Jesus masterfully demonstrates what faith is all about: putting aside my own desires so that a greater good may be served.
