My all time, even 9 years later, favourite album. A large step forward from "Open Up...", their musically ability has increased big time, keyboards are used in most songs, a piano in one, a lot more time spent on production and all the lyrics a tad more cryptic. Not so much a party album, but every song either makes a statement, tells a story or takes you on a ride. There are absolutely no fillers here- no songs could have been B sides, this is 100%, Poison at their best.
STRANGE WAYS OF UNCLE JACK -10/10. I love this title and have no idea about what the song is about, but sounds great with headphones. Its a great start to an album. [Uncle jack later gets a mention on MOTLEY CRUES - MOTLEY CRUES album.
VALLEY OF LOST SOULS - Fast paced rock and roll. About moving to the big smoke, chasing a dream.
( Flesh & Blood ) SACRIFICE - About a girl thinking will sex ruin their relationship and Bret trying to convincing her otherwise. This has the greatest beat and the rythym rocks.
SWAMPJUICE ( SOUL- O ) - CC gets his first instrumental and comes out with a country hick/duelling guitar thing. With an accoustic guitar in one channel and a slide comming from the other.
UNSKINNY BOP - The lyrics are loosely based on one of CC's experiences and the music came from a jamming session when Rik stumbled onto THAT drum beat ( before 1st verse ). A very unserious party song. unskinny.mid
LET IT PLAY - The intro still makes me smile. About letting music taking you away from lifes stress'. Bret does his < at 2:44 > she bop, she bop, she bop thing and the result is a great upbeat tune.
LIFE GOES ON - Newer version of "I Wont Forget You". Has a heavy use of background keyboards and the powerfull solo make this a great ballad. No one does a love song like Poison.
COME HELL OR HIGH WATER - A darker song for Poison, about 'when the going gets tough....'. This song has been around since Look What The Cat Dragged In but Poison say it has never fitted an album til now.
RIDE THE WIND - About the life of a biker. This reminds me of Bryan Adams' Summer Of 69. Has a great solo, using 2 guitars and the guitar / bass rythym after is ear candy.
DONT GIVE UP AN INCH GIRL - About a boys first sexual encounter. Catchy tune. A very simple song musically, the whole song is centre on 3 power chords. Was the first song off "Flesh.." that I could play.
SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN - 10/10. Lyrics are all about life and how is it possible we have a God, when you look around and see so much pain and suffering. Another favourite solo - even the video clipis perfect ( look out for Brets tear drop ). This one song, if nothing else, proves just how much they have matured themselves and as a band. And are much much more than just another guitar based party band. A musical masterpiece. something.mid
BALL AND CHAIN - All bout being in love. Starts of with Bret & CC jamming, then launches into guitar intensive rock.
LIFE LOVES A TRAGEDY - Starts of with a slow sad love song then turns into a fast tempo 'lifes to short...' type song. The result is a great Rolling Stones influenced rock and roll tune.
POOR BOY BLUES - Yet again they end with a great blues tune.
