You spot the indoor arena a distance away, and feeling curious of the muted shouts and thump of hooves, head straight for the gates. You blink around at the sandy oval, currently sporting an array of red and white striped barrels, around which was dashing in an impressive show what you first supposed was an Applaoosa by the horse's color.
He was painted a dark bay with high, perfect stockings and carried a flashy pure white blanket draped over his haunches. But he couldn't have been an Appaloosa. The Romanistic nose, thick arched neck, full mane and tail and feathering easily testified to that.
But the stallion turned like a Quarter Horse around the barrels, throwing dirt skyward as he took off at the urging of his young rider, gallop beating the ground in a quick drumroll between rounds. He wasn't the fastest racer you'd ever seen, but there was no denying his potential.
A movement at your side took your gaze from the animal. Ima, owner of the ranch, came walking up smiling. Her eyes were all for the horse and rider, watching them finish the track and begin cooling off with a brisk walk before turning to you.
"We call him Stalker, though his full name is Web's Every Breath You Take. He's our first attempt at introducing Friesian bloodlines into our leopard draft breeding program," She says matter of factly.
Ah, you think, that explains his odd conformation.
"He's actually doing pretty well. We weren't sure if a Friesian would throw the heavy bone we were looking for," She says with a soft chuckle. "And really he's a lightblood compared with some of our other stock, but I have to admit he's impressed us a time or two.
"Yep, we certainly have high hopes for this boy," Ima nods almost absently, watching as Stalker is dismouted and led from the arena toward the stables. She turns back to you, broad smile flickering across her face.
"If you want, you can go see him. He's not up for stud to outside mares at this time, but he is open for public visitations. Well, I'll be at the foaling barn if you need anything. Have fun on your tour."
Ima grins as she turns, waving briefly over her shoulder before heading down the walkway.
