Interstate 44 runs from St. Louis southwest across Missouri to Oklahoma near Joplin. Much of I-44 is aligned along old U.S. Rt. 66. I-44 runs rugged terrain through much of Missouri.

Currently, the Missouri Department of Trasportation and the Illinois Department of Trasportation are planning on building another bridge of interstate standards across the Mississippi River, north of Downtown St. Louis. If this is done, Interstate 70 would be re-routed across this bridge and off the Poplar Street Bridge. With I-70 being re-routed out of downtown, plans are for I-44 to be extended up past the Poplar Street Bridge and end where I-70 comes into Missouri just north of the Edward Jones Dome (formaly the Trans World Dome) north of Downtown St. Louis.
