Well, I didn't spend much time in the Netherlands. I was exposed to the countryside on my way from France and Belgium and we were held up because our tour guide couldn't find our bus after we crossed the English Channel. We were supposed to have an evening "on the town" - I wanted to see the infamous red light district - but could only squeeze in a late-night drink at the Amsterdam Hilton (Beatles reference alert!). I also tried their "pizza". It was thin, crispy pastry with tomatoes on it. Blecch. Here's me in the early morning hours in Amsterdam. Later in the day, we stopped at a lighthouse and I took this picture of a weird bent-over monument, which struck me as completely bizarre, and I had my picture taken on the stairs. Unfortunately, it was really overcast and lightly drizzling on this particular day. The thing I remember most about the Netherlands are the wooden shoes (size 46, please). We went to a place along a road in the middle of nowhere where this man made cheese and wooden shoes...oh, and he displayed three-horned goats in the front of his shop. I was hoping for more sideshow freaks throughout the journey, but nothing quite came close to these buggers. In case you want to learn about the other 99.5% of the Netherlands that I didn't explain, go to the Netherlands Board of Tourism. I'm sure you can see a lot of pictures of windmills, tulips, canals, and flat land there. If you'd like to pick and choose which of my pictures you want to view, visit my Photo Gallery for the Netherlands. |
