I am a rock of salt
chiseled into being
by sunlight and currents
now a mighty fortress
for the sake of a tiny flame.
Time the great destroyer
makes inroads in my ramparts
the forces that sculpted me
set to make way for new works.
All is as meant to be.
But this flame alight in my sanctum
inspires me to a rebellion
of most unfathomable kind.
All of a sudden I
for eons unperturbed
by these comings and leavings
these givings and takings
stand in brazen defiance
resisting the will of my makers
determined to become
a chalice.
