THE COVERS OF THE ORIGINALS

We need your help here!!! We know that lots of bands did a version of "You Must Be A Witch" and other Dead Moon/Fred Cole songs. There is of course the Dead Moon tribute comp (order your copy today!), see the track list of that great effort on Last Chance Records... but it didn't start there! Like years and years ago De Effenaar (a club in Eindhoven, Holland) organized a "Dead Moon contest", for bands to play their favourite Dead Moon song. The three bands that made it to the finals formed a very special 'support act' for a Dead Moon show and of course Fred, Toody and Andrew had to decide who was the winner... Can't remember who that was actually, but it was fun, especially the band De Bossen , from Antwerp, Belgium - who are known to play "Dagger Moon" regularly. They also opened for Dead Moon at the 10th Anniversary Bash in Haarlem, Oct 7th 1997, toured with them, and have a song that refers to them (see below), they are on the Dead Moon tribute comp of course... check them out!
Bottom line here: please let us know if you find a version of any Fred Cole song on any 7", LP, CD or whatever!

THE FUZZTONES: "You Must Be A Witch" (b-side of re-recorded version of "Nine Months Later", 7" and 12", Situation Two Records SIT 61 and SIT61T.)
The b-side of their 1998 "One Girl Man" single also has a version of "You Must Be A Witch" on it: a whole new recording, although from the same 'old' Fuzztones line up as the above, who apparently are back on board again. Peculiar! (Sundazed Records SEP139)
THE DROOGS: "You Must Be A Witch" (on "Heads Examined" 12", Plug 'n Socket Records 006+101/Closer Records CL007, re-released on "Anthology" CD (not on the LP version), Music Maniac MMCD005.)
THE NOMADS: "Graveyard" (b-side of "Pack Of Lies" 7", Estrus ES7104) By the way: on the sleeve photo inside the Nomads CD "Powerstrip", their (now ex-) drummer Ed is wearing a cool self-made Dead Moon shirt...!
THE MONO MEN: "You Must Be A Witch" (b-side of "Monster" 7", Man's Ruin Records MR 013)
THE MONO MEN: "54/40 Or Fight" (on "10 Cool Ones" LP/CD, Scat Records, SCAT54)
LINK WRAY: in a bass solo in "Born To Be Wild", Link's bassplayer Eric 'Danno' Geevers (who happens to be the maniac maintaining these pages) proudly quotes the opening riff from "Walking On My Grave". (CD "Walking Down A Street Called Love", Visionary Records VICD 010)
JOLLY JUMPERS: band from Finland; do "Dagger Moon" on their album "Rurality" released by Gaga Goodies in 1993 (thanks Jude for the information - and this version is definitely Fred Cole-approved!).
THE CYNICS: "You Must Be A Witch" (on "Learn to Lose" album, Get Hip records, GH1008)
THE PHILISTEINS: "You Must Be A Witch" - this Australian band released their version on their mini-album "Bloody Convicts" (Cynics and Philisteins info supplied by Marko - thanks!)
ANGEL' IN HEAVY SYRUP: this Japanes all-girl band do Fred's song "Underground Railroad" on their self-titled 1st cd. It was released in 1991 by Alchemy Records in Japan and licensed in the US by Subterranean Records (we heard this one from Toody who tracked down a copy of the album as a birthday present for Fred...) Strange little record.
CAT POWER (an alias of Chan Marshall, sometimes accompanied by some friends) does "Johnny's Got A Gun" on a 7" on Undercover Records (information provided by Amy, thanks!) The catalog number is UNCV003, it's from 1996, and the EPs title is "Undercover".
ANTIETAM do a version of "Graveyard" on their much praised "Rope-A-Dope" album (Homestead records HMS 218-2)
(Thanks Jim!)
THE BIRDMEN OF ALKATRAZ from Italy did "You Must Be A Witch" on the rather obscure "Exploding Underground Compilation" LP (Direct Hit Records DHLP 1001), brought to you by Kaleidoscope magazine about 10 years ago.
MENSEN do a version of "Clouds Of Dawn" on Hey You 2x7" (Bang! Records, 1999, bang!-3), something I found out through Grunnen Rocks, who also list:
POWDERMONKEYS doing "Destination X" on a split 7" with The Hellacopters (Butcher's Hook, 1999, HOOK 004).
From Gregor in Croatia I got some cool stuff too:
THE SPOONS do "Poor Born" on their "Supervoxin'" CD (NIKA CD 014) - and that's a mighty cool Phantom IV there, too, Suzie!
DICKY B. HARDY do "Black September" on their '95 CD "Why Aren't You Screaming" (FV Music 004, and hey... it was recorded in Holland - at Klank Studio! Great place! Great cafe within crawling distance, too :-)
MINUSI, a now defunct band (whose drummer currently plays in a band with an ex-member of Dicky B. Hardy), did "Clouds of Dawn" on their 1996 demo-CD. (This sounds like I'm an expert on the Croatia/Slovenia garage scene, but hey I'm not - I got the info from Gregor... thanks a lot!)
BABY WOODROSE from Denmark let me know they do Freds "Don't Look Back" on a split 7" with The Defectors (Ewing Records OIL 002). Cool!

Something we hadn't thought of until now:
Bands can have songs about Dead Moon, too - like the band LOVE KILLS, who mailed us - and whose cool-named song "A Shot Of Dead Moon" is certainly worth a place here. It can be heard on their demo tape "Alive at Tivoli" along with 8 more "sex punk and roll" songs (as they describe their music)...
I believe it's now on the set list of The Bips, whose band member Jozzy started a cool Dead Moon photo site under the same title: Shot Of Dead Moon!
DE BOSSEN , mentioned before, have a song called "Dead Moon Head Coat" which can be found on a bonus 7" EP free with the vinyl version of their album "The Girl Collection" (Kinky Star Records KSLP003+KS45000, not sold seperately). Recommended...

THE KWYET KINGS, an excellent band from Norway, have released something really extraordinary: a song called Dead Moon Night which is NOT in a strict sense a Dead Moon cover; the music is written by lead singer Arne Thelin who uses Dead Moon song titles ONLY as lyrics! Click here for the actual lyrics, check out their album "Been Where? Done What?" for the song (Screaming Apple Records, SCALP120).

And finally there was a Dead Moon cover band...
We mentioned them here before as well. They were called Dagger Moon, hailed from Holland, but after a year or so they split up because they couldn't find the right people... however, before the split, Dagger Moon also made it to the Tribute Comp!
