Best known as Kim in Miss Saigon, Lea made her professional debut in the Repertory
Philippines' production of King and I at the age of 7 and has since appeared in various
plays. She began her recording career at the age of 10 with the album Small Voice from
which she recived a gold record.
In 1989, Lea together with other Filipinos went to London to portray the role of Kim in
the hit musical, Miss Saigon where she received a Sir Laurence Olivier award. In 1991, she
went to New York to portray the same role on Broadway where she garnered Tony, Drama Desk,
Outer Critics' Circle Awards and Theater World Award. While in Miss Saigon, she recorded
the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Disney's Aladdin and later Tuptim in a new
recording of King and I.
In 1993, Lea played the role of the street waif Eponine in the hit musical Les
Miserables. She also performed the song "A Whole New World" from Disney's Aladdin in the
65th Annual Academy Awards, where the song won an Oscar. In the same year, she recorded
her first international album with Atlantic Records entitled Lea Salonga which has gone
platinum and gold in some parts of Southeast Asia.
In 1998, she again appeared in another Walt Disney animated film, Mulan, where she did
the singing voice of Mulan.
In 2001-2002, Lea Salonga played the role of Mei-Li in the revival of the musical
Flower Drum Song both in the LA and Broadway production. Later, she also did a recording
of the said musical. During the LA run of the musical, Lea met her husband, Robert Chien,
a cousin of one of her fellow cast and the who introduced him to Ms. Salonga. The two
got married on January 10, 2004 in LA.
Aside from these, Lea also did various concerts, plays, and recordings both in the
Philippines and abroad.
